Ralph - Turkules is having attitude these days....total bellybutton! He's been trying to spur me or bite me when I walk in. He used to be a sweet boy - never wanted to be petted or anything, but liked to eat out of your hand and follow us around. Jekyl and Hyde??

R2Elk - I didn't realize that lavender and self-blue are the same! I have a neighbor with a lavendar tom, I have no idea if he has any hens but worth checking I think. Very good to know, I'd be happy with either slate or self blue.

We had our first all-out snood pulling tom fight today. Ick. They all jumped on Big Bird and she got squashed under them. So I took her in the barn and left the boys outside. She seems okay, but we'll make new housing arrangements tomorrow. Stupid boys!
 
Oh geez! Now I see Big Bird! Glad you rescued her from the Bourbon scrum. Poor Turkulus is going through that bellybutton stage.

Seriously, are you keeping all the boys, or are you going to try and place a few? Or....maybe set up a breeding pen for each boy with a different type of hen! Get some Palms, Blues, a few Narri, etc. You could start the west coast branch of the calico flock! :lol:

Maybe you guys can send Holm back to the west coast on Amtrak with a blue hen. He could get her registered as an emotional support animal. :lau
 
DH is working on getting me to get rid of some of the boys - I'm into just getting more pens and separating them. It's weird, most of the time they get along just fine. I'll have to keep an eye on them and see if this is going to be a regular thing. I have tractors prepped and ready for an intervention if needed. I plan to move Big Bird tomorrow, I'm going to see if she's okay with my hens, and if that doesn't work I'll start on plan B which is moving 3 boys out into tractors.

Realistically, longer term, I'm looking to rehome a couple of them and supplement with a few hens.

Well Wyoming looks about half as far as Minnesota :) I'm all for starting the West Coast calico flock....DH might not be as excited about it though :gig
 
I've never been to Wyoming. Let's just all meet at R2elks! We can all trade turkeys and dig up those olive trees for Ralphie! Feedman, I can pick you up on the way. Aurora, you may need to register for an emotional support turkey & fly out.
 
It has been a long time since I last posted in here, due to the holidays and all. Sadly, the tom that was injured back in November didn't make it - I think he died of liver failure. All of my other turkeys are doing well. For those who were wondering - yes, putting lights on turkeys will push them into breeding early.

Dad told me that I should build a turkey tractor to keep them away from the house. So I did. I don't think he liked it very much, though - maybe I should have painted it a different color?

Get rid of the extra toms. Multiple toms and one hen = no fertile eggs and injured or dead hen now that breeding season has arrived.

Interesting link - I'm going to check out what is in their feed. Do you know if they mean to add supplements existing feed? I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable trying to create a new feed for them - I'd be worried that I wouldn't make the right nutrition for them.

I know that I have to do something with the toms soon - and I'll move Big Bird out of their area while I figure out where they are going so she doesn't get hurt :/ I hate getting rid of them - but unless I have separate areas for everyone, it will have to happen :(.
