A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Feisty, currently I have 9 hens. Speckled Sussex, Barnvelder, & Australorp. They range in age from 7 years to 1 year. Some of my old girls are only producing a few eggs a week. So I'll add a few chicks this spring. Most likely Speckled Sussex. Those are my oldest girls.

And I have the two turkey hens. I'm still trying to decide if I will add another hen or a tom. Feedman has a blue palm I keep thinking about! I've only had the girls since July. I feel like I'm still learning. So I'm proceeding with caution. I don't want to get over my head. I'm concerned about only having the two girls. God forbid something happens to one. Then I'll end up with the remaining freaked out bird sleeping on my headboard!

My turkeys react more to the squirrels. They will chase them. However, if the blue Jays start screeching they start scanning the skies for hawks.

I love your speckled sussex - Betty, I think? I would love to add a couple of those to my group eventually, they are so pretty :)

I can see the concern with the turkeys - Turkules did not seem to enjoy being the only turkey, so we got the bourbon reds. Your girls are so sweet, they would probably do great with another bird!

My Sussex are almost as fun as my turkeys. By far my best foragers. Sweet & friendly. Big easy going birds.

Did not get Daisy out on the agility equipment today due to the rain. However, she & Annie decided to roost on top of the A Frame. After we get over our snow & ice I'm going to set up the weave poles. I really think she'll do well on them! Ralphie. ...stop rolling your eyes.

I had a hard time putting the turkeys away tonight as I said. I did not tell you the little skirmish that occurred.

I turned to get the stragglers and move them into the main group. I thought one of the young Tom came after me, but I could not really tell. I even asked him " you weren't going to jump me, were you?" I told him he could not hurt me, but I would take his head off at the neck...

I am not sure he listened. I did not see or feel him hit me. But something must have happened. When I got them into the pen, JJ took after him and showed him where he belonged on the pecking order..

I find it amazing how JJ "protects" my spot in the pecking order. It is about the same way Sidekick protects JJ's spot.

It was kind of cute.

It is really neat how they will protect you. JJ is an awesome turkey - makes a hundred colors of babies and is a bodyguard as well - I want a JJ!! :)

That's interesting Ralph. Daisy can be protective. She will stand between me and another person. If I'm fooling around with another bird, she's circling keeping an eye on the situation.

I'm finding turkey behavior intriguing. Hence the agility equipment. Just how much can a turkey learn? Just how much can you get a turkey to do? Don't laugh guys! I'm working on a young dog....might as well train a turkey too!
