A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

My Toms frustrate me at times, mainly bedtime!. But I like them following me around. I am not crazy about them picking on the roosters, but that is just part of having a blended flock.

I had a guinea harassing one of the Toms this morning. Do you suppose the turkeys know which guinea is a male and which a hen? I might be able to use this super ability if they have it.

I always tell people to beware of the Toms. They are like a boar, bull, stallion, or even a rooster and can attack you and change personalities in a second. My grandkids love JJ. I do not even let them go near JJ unless I am there. They di not get to pet or touch him unless I am holding him. It is just not worth taking the chance. I doubt JJ would hurt them but you can never be sure.

I think Porter will settle down when I get him locked up alone and I can spend time with him forcing him to submit to me holding him and controlling him.

I know it is not the way most real farmers would raise them, but I don't want a bunch of turkeys to just have as a "crop". I want them to interact with me, so I whine about their bad behavior then go out and make them do more bad things to whine about.... Sort of like my wife does with me... Its her fault.

I love my 1202, I really do but this thing is having issues. I think it needs an overhaul. Last night, we're sitting here watching a movie and I happen to look over and my temperature thing is down to 75. I knew it wasn't that low for long because I had looked a little while ago. Hubby told me to try smacking it so I did and the light kicked back on and the temp was back up in no time so I'm assuming the eggs were still very warm. It was good at 10 last night when we went to bed. Got up at 6 this morning and the two is down to 69! Took another smack or two to kick back on. This time, it's taking forever to get back up to temp. All the eggs are cold :/ I think I'm going to move the next batch of eggs to the hatcher a day early and biweekly they're ok. I'm guessing it must have a loose wire in there or something. What kills me is I have a bunch of eggs coming this week from dheltzel and orders that will be decimated if these eggs don't make it. GAAAA!

It is amazing how much cool temperatures the eggs can take. I have had power outages that lasted for hours and it didn't seem to affect the hatch. It sounds like you may have a wafer going bad.

Good luck.

I hope you're right that the eggs can handle it. I know how temperature sensitive poults can be one they've hatched. I don't think it's a wafer though. I just replaced both of them with brand new ones maybe a month ago.

@Chaos18 the babies are beautiful and growing nicely :) the one worth the crowd toes, you could try splinting them to try to straighten them out. You'd have to look up how though. It may or may not work. I have two girls with crooked toes. One, I hatched and only has 1 crooked toe and has no issues whatsoever. The other, I adopted from a neighbor when they got rid of all their chickens. ALL her toes are crooked. It took her a while to learn how to roost in my coop but she gets along just fine. She can't scratch well outside but she has no trouble in any other area.

These have a dual thermostat because they tend to "fail on". I does sound like a loose wire somewhere, but try opening up the front thermostat all the way and setting the back one down to 99.5. The back one us supposed to be the "safety" and cut off at 102, but that is just the convention, you can reverse their function as long as you remember which one gets the fine adjustments. If the switch on the front one is sticking shut, then pulling the wafer far away should prevent it from ever switching off and sticking.

He doesn't seem to be affected by them. He still gets around just fine and can still run away from me just as fast as the others can. I'm not sure if he hatched that way or not (he probably did) because I didn't see any of them as babies walking weird or anything like that.

I'll have to try that. Thank you :) hubby has already agreed to help me do a total overhaul to it once we finally shut it down later on this year. I think we'll probably replace ask the old wiring and the switches that go with the wafers.

I have to admit that I was terrified the first time that I realized that I had over 100 eggs in this thing that I would be stuck with 100 poults and chicks. I'm happy to say that they're flying out almost as fast as they hatch :) I told hubby about that the other day and he just said, he wasn't worried, but then, he never had any idea how many were in it and he wants to keep it that way lol.

I wanted to let you know, I caught Sunny (CCL BOY) attempting to mate for the first time today. He went after one of the ameraucana hens who promptly chased him the other direction but he came back and tried again lol. It's so funny when they start trying and learning.

Chaos....there are several threads about splinting toes. But it seems like they splint toes if they are curled. His looked crooked, from what I could tell. If it doesn't seem to affect him I'd let it go unless it starts to get worse. Boy they are getting big. And quite handsome!!

Aurora, hope the eggs are ok. How annoying.
