A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I am still waiting for eggs... Tge turkeys are breeding but haven't started laying... Last year I got my furst egg on February 14th.

Hi all! I haven't been around the forum much for a while. Not since my favorite turkey, Cranberry, got eaten by a coyote back in September.

But I went and bought my two remaining Jennies a tom on Valentine's Day. (Appropriate present for them, I think.)

(He's molting by the way. Huge pig pin feathers coming in on his tail. I love it!)

So now that I have a male, it brings up a few questions for me. How long will it take for my two females to make friends with him? I thought being the only three turkeys among 16 chickens, they would group together. But everyone pretty much leaves him completely alone.

He basically spends the whole day walking around like this. I don't even know if he stops to eat. (I have seen him drink.) Is he trying to impress the ladies, or scare off all the potential enemies he finds himself surrounded by?

When I am in the yard, he goes around me like this in circles. Is that good or bad?

I've seen some signs that my Jennies might get interested in laying eggs soon. One was on the ground tucking dried leaves all around her body. The next minute she had given that up and was off with the flock. Will there be some kind of hormonal switch that will cause them to finally notice that there is a male present?

I'm getting excited for something to happen, because I've been playing around with the genetic calculator. I chose a Royal Palm for my tom because my females are a Narragansett and a Sweetgrass, so I think those will be great pairings for all my future little poults. Thank you if anybody can tell me what kind of behaviors I can be expecting from the three of them. I've tried to research it. Hundreds of pages to search through, and my computer loads v..e...r...y s..l..o..w..l..y....

They should become "friends" soon enough. Give them another week or two.

It sounds like your hen is getting a spot ready to lay her eggs. Hormones definetly kick in this time of year! My hen has been bouncing all over like a little goat!

I used to think my tom never ate but he actually waited till all the humans were gone to stop strutting! Then when we walk outside he starts strutting again!!

You have a beautiful tom and should get some beautiful poults this spring!

It is rare to see a tom eat! Well almost. They spend so much time strutting. If he is circling you he might be sizing you up. You need to walk through him whenever you see him. You reach for him. Keep him leery and subservient to you. If you can pick him up, hold him, pet him, monkey with his hen. make him know he is your "female dog"!

I know R2elk does not socialize his turkeys, That is another thing you can do, but then you must make sure you do not interact with the hens either. ( IMHO) but I could be all wet on that.

I am getting 2 eggs a day. Hopefully infertile ones, I am building places for turkeys as fast as I can.

Welcome back!

This indicates that he has been imprinted on people. He is courting you because he doesn't know the difference between people and turkeys. Don't be surprised if he goes after your husband once he becomes comfortable in his new surroundings. Since he finds you desirable as a mate, I don't think that you personally have anything to worry about from him. I would recommend that you pen him with the hen turkeys without the chickens and hope that he will learn that he can court them also.
