A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I'm home and I'm sick. I let Daisy & Annie out to graze in the big yard. Sat out there with them for quite awhile. No sign that either bird needed to lay an egg. All was calm & sunny. Went into the house & fell asleep. Thunder and someone frantically beating on my door woke me up. Daisy had hopped the 6 foot fence & was four yards down the road. I ran down there in a hurricane with no shoes. I finally saw her & started calling her. She called back, but did start heading toward me. I grabbed her & made the run home. No idea if it was the storm or the need to lay an egg that made her hop the fence. Most of my neighbors know her. Just grateful she stopped in the poring rain to let me know she was loose.

Oh my goodness Memphis - chasing Daisy down the road in a storm, it's a good thing she comes when she's called ;)

Well you guys are a terrible influence on me....I've been loving the baby pics so much that I had an unplanned moment of weakness today. Fluffy butts where I wasn't expecting them... 2 Sicilian buttercups, 2 cuckoo marans and 2 jersey Giants. Oops.

Now I have no excuses....must get the new coop started :/

My h--l week is finally over ended up with almost 120 hours in 8 days.

I now have 6 turkey hens that have decided to brood finally. Which is good They were about to run me over with eggs.

Put my next set of hatchers in lockdown tomorrow think is 40 headed there.

Memphis glad your home and girls got to enjoy the big yard. Get better soon. Thank goodness for nice neighbors.

Mom of silkies: congrats on a nice looking hatch. But it looks like one little alien in the bunch.

R2elk...the neighbors really like the girls. I kept thanking my neighbor as we ran down the street in search of her. She said "It's Daisy, I'm not going to just leave her". Normally I can tell when she needs to lay. I usually keep her & Annie loose in my garden when she shows signs she has to lay. Their coop & nest box are accessible from my yard.

Good for you Feisty! Those Sicilian Buttercup are just darling! I'm very curious to know more about them....keep us posted as they grow.

Wow Feedman! What a week you've had. Hope you get a chance to recover.

Yeah, next time I go running through a hurricane I must remember to wear shoes

Perhaps someone here could help a newbie to turkeys to identify what we have. Heres the facts, i will try to be as clear as possible:
1.We purchased 6 poults from big R, 3 weeks ago
2. Straight run. Mixed breeds, same bin, store had no idea to breed. "We get what they send us"
3. Called Privett, they were hatchery choice and the do not record what is sent.
4. Five appeared to be "bronze", one was best guess chocolate
5. The chocolate was weak and lethargic from time of purchase and died within 24 hours
6. The bronze: two quite small, two fairly big, one in the middle.noticable by first week. All similar markings
7. At week 3, largest is not as active and inquisitive, very little flight attempts, feathers are " messy", and very bare along the sides of the body, and is Big. Seems idk, torpid? Maybe? Eats/drinks/sleeps as usual for the group
8. Mid sized poult has same wild type feather pattern but lighter base? Color . began displaying today, totally cracked us up lol, chest bumps all others.
9. Two smallest have had consistant growth and in all respects appear to be doing great.
10. Brooder began at 99-100 degrees, slowly tapering heat based on behavior.
11. Feeding game bird starter after 1 week of flock raiser as the store was out. They wouldnt eat the dry crumbles do we wet it to mash, worked great! Slowly decreasing the water content to transition to dry food. Clean water at all times, marbles included.
12. Brooder changed daily started on old towels we had been saving for this. Changed to lg shavings at abt 2 weeks.
Sorry for the novel, but we have fallen completely under the spell of these little guys, and we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to help them thrive, but mostly i need to know if i have broad breasted or standard.... If broad some how i must distance myself, knowing they will be dinner.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, i appeciate your help!

Just plugged up my hatcher forlockdown tomorrow. And candled.

Gonna have some early ones.

2 eggs were chirping at me when I candled them. But have several other at looks like different stages of incubation. This gonna be intestine hatch.

Some that were peeping should be my chocolates.
