A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Well I fed Big Bird cut up hard boiled egg - and as predicted - she gobbled it up. Her beak is still obviously sore, but didn't look like she'd damaged it any more today. Now I have a turkey with a mild underbite  She managed to mush the egg all over my hand (I didn't want her pecking into a hard bowl). I'll give her one or two eggs per day until I can watch her eating on the weekend to make sure that she's able to eat enough regular feed.

Feathyr - I have one broody turkey who kind of resembles the "vampire turkey" too.

Bantambird - Ladybird looks pretty cute all puffed up :). My Coco struts whenever the rooster or the toms irritate her. Big Bird strutted a bit when she was a poult, but I haven't seen her do it in months. I wonder if that is their way of telling the boys to leave them alone? :p

Turkey parents - So sorry to hear about Mars :hugs

Gevshiba - sounds like a bit like herding cats, moving the birds  Hopefully the Tom and rooster behave themselves!
. It might be a moot point. My rooster flogged me today. He regretted it, but he might not have the best memory. Maybe taking the tom over would be a good and humbling thing.

New poult last night! Bourbon red x royal palm! 3 more to hatch in the bator, and candled the turkey hens eggs last night and so far everything looks great! It's crazy how turkey eggs seem to show so much more movement than the chicken eggs

If the father is the Bourbon Red, all the poults will be Red Bronze. If the Royal Palm is the father, it is sex linked and all the male poults will be Red Bronze and all the female poults will be Golden Narragansett.

Good luck.

Eve is off the nest...alone. She left the nest today by knocking down the barrier that I had put up to keep the other hens out. She was walking all around the coop, talking very quietly to herself. I don't know if her chicks and poult didn't books to her or just couldn't hear her or what but they did not follow her. With the barrier down, other hens were going in to lay their eggs. He two chicks were happy to crawl under whoever happened to be in the nest to stay warm. Her poult just escaped and was running around everywhere but would not go to Eve. If didn't look good so I just took them all and brought them back to the brooder. Eve didn't care that I was around them and she would not go to them. She has been being very defensive of the coop though. She's been chasing everyone out all day (except Adam and me) even workout get babies there anymore. I adjutant had to go convince the mottled babies to go in tonight. Usually, they're in there roosting on their own in the evenings but they were afraid of her tonight. I feel bad taking them but I don't want them to die. She seemed serious but when they wouldn't follow her, it just seemed like she was abandoning them. Oh well.

Ralphie....I was thinking about your quest for a Foo Foo bird for the suburban backyard chicken owners. Why not market your SS as the perfect suburban chicken. Friendly, socially interactive, too heavy bodied to fly over fences....and all the eye candy you could ask for. Clean legged...so no mud or snow build up on leg feathers . Rather non-broody and fairly quiet. What more could you ask for in a city chicken?

Those of us with SS know how great that are. the rest of the world refuses to believe how perfect they are. If I had to only have a few chickens a couple would be SS.

My Porter eggs arrived!

3 -blacks
3- Bourbon Reds
4- Bronze
8- Royal Palms
3- Blues/self blue
3 white hollands.-

I hope I get a good hatch and have these to mix in for breeders next year! I was hoping against hope for sweetgrass or Narragansetts. I am happy with them.... I should have asked for no Blues, but that was not an option of theirs.
