As Walnuthilll says you either rode a cow or nothing. We would have to go out in the pasture to get the cattle somedays for milking. Most of the time they would come back, but not always. When they did not we had to go get them, ON FOOT, because we did not have a horse...
If we did not ride a cow back we had to walk back. We had a large pasture, it was a mile from the house to the other end of the pasture, because of fencing round a "bottomless swamp" we could walk nearly a mile and a half one way....... so we would jump on a cow and hold on tight. The cows were not really into being rode. They bucked jumped and ran real fast. Most of the time you never got to ride the same cow twice. The advantage of having lots of cows was their short memories and not learning from another cows experiences.
The back bone on a cow is a rather unpleasant sensation on a guys crotch. BUT they can be ridden, if you do not mind the pain and have the skill to hold on tight. DO NOT USE THE EARS AS HANDLES!!!
Grab the neck and sort of lie down reaching forward, it works best, grabbing the ears will result in immediate ejection from the animal.
