A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have read where several people's power has gone out and some between 6-8 hrs. and they still had a good hatch. So don't get to upset.

got home from work today for lunch went to check incubators....and the incubator full of eggs had quit working! the fan was still going but it wasnt heating. temp was at 77 degrees...as quickly as possible i switched all the eggs to the good still air incubator and got them warming back up. hopefully they will be ok...time will tell. i had rio grande eggs, royal palm and some mix eggs that will be narragansett/rio and bronze/rio
Wow, bad, bad, bad!

Hopefully you got them in time.

Speaking of COLD eggs I have a question. Do any of you have troubles with young hens when they are broody, leaving the eggs for too long of a time or just abandoning them?

Ethel was horrible last year as a yearling, she was unable to o stay with it until August. I have that blue on a nest and she is spending more time off it than on it right now, I think she has killed the eggs. It is partially my fault. I removed the other turkeys from her pen and moved them so they would not fight over the nest. All she does is walk around and call for the other turkeys. She can see them they are only 20 ft away. JJ and Ethel walk right up to her pen al day long.

I am debating moving her and the nest to the other pen and see if she sits there, or just throwing her eggs away and break her of being broody.
What do you think?

And here are the babies I moved to the nursery today:

The one is the same baby twice and I missed a good shot of one somehow. I see I had an Ethel egg in the batch too by the red/brown/rust/lilac color.

Ralph, I can't say anything about broody hens. This is my first year with hens. The last two years I did not get any even after spending over 600.00 on buying turkey. I finally bought 3 BBB and one turned out to be a hen and I still have her. So no broody's for me.

But if she is not staying on the nest you can bet the eggs need to go. Not all will go broody from what I have read they don't breed for that any more.

Very cute chicks

I can't imagine. I hatched some turkey several days ago then a couple of Welsumers and I put the chicks in with the turkey and no problems. Hopefully they will get better about them.
Maybe they were just so small they did not know what they were?

It ok, Those Turkeys were presold, I just wanted the chicken chicks both for myself and to get the turkeys eating and drinking.. All 8 are in their new home and now we await the hatching on the 24th and the 30th :)

Cody I just remembered that ronnot1 posted a study or paper on hatching that said if the power was going to be out longer than abt. 8 hrs. to put the eggs in the fridg. till the power came back on.
Ron is on the hatch a long threads you can pm him and ask him. He is very helpful.

ralph, one of my hens has started wanting to be broody. i noticed that she was off the nest quite a bit. i have a total of 3 hens and a gobbler now. one of the hens arent laying yet as far as i know. the other one was getting on the nest and laying. i dont know if she was pushing the broody hen off or what. it just happens that i was building them a new bigger pen and i finished it so i put the 2 hens in the new pen and left the broody and the gobbler in the old pen. i havent seen her off the nest all day today. i checked on the this morning, at lunch and was out there quite awhile after work tonight also. by the way, im leaving the tom in the old pen separate from the other 2 hens because, for one, he is mean and i dont want to be watching my back all the time in case i decide to do something else to the pen before i say its finished, and two, the hen that is laying was wounded a couple weeks ago from something and im wanting to keep him from breeding her so that she will heal. i asked a friend that raises turkeys about the hen getting off the nest so much and she said its normal. they usually do that for the first couple days and then they stay on the nest full time after that. i dont know if that helps or not

and i candled 2 eggs a little while ago and there was still movement in both!! :) i know im not in the clear yet but hopefully it didnt kill any of them! going to order a new incubator on monday. think i want the genesis hovabator forced air. anybody like those you have another recommendation?

I have a 1588 genesis it seems to be a good incubator. Held good temp. And had about 70 percent hatch rate.

I also have a brinsea octagon 20 adv. I've had a lot more hatches out of it.

For the most part I prefer the brinsea. Hard plastic. The genesis is styrofoam. Brinsea is easier to clean.

Both good incubator.

id LOVE a brinsea, however, i cant afford one right now. the plan was to get these eggs to hatch and maybe another batch and that would give me all the turkeys i want and then get the smaller brinsea that holds 7 eggs just to keep my flock going. so it looks like i will be getting the hovabator for now. maybe a brinsea in a few years
