A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Congrats on the new babies! Marans are hit or miss when it comes to egg color and personality. They are known to be an outgoing and friendly breed though most of the ones I've had were skittish with mean roos. The ones I have now though are very friendly, even the roo, who comes when called and lets me pet him and pick him up. Handle them a lot and good luck!

I had a bitter sweet 24 hours.. I lost one of my Marans last night... I had been checking on them regularly but I looked and saw one on the floor of my broader with another on it. It lived a little while.. poor thing.. I held it against me for a couple hours to keep it warm.. it peeped then it was quite. When I moved, it would peep... well.. then it didn't. ..
Finally had a hatch totally from my incubator. It was one of four eggs set on the 7th. I had gotten rid of the others.. not a good rate but I was about to totally give up on my bater.
After it started running around, I was afraid it would get out of his little pan and on the turner. I moved it in with the Marans but kept it above them... it started getting caught in the lid so I had to lower it.. it got out.. I was worried about it and watched it... after hours... it seems to be getting on with the week Olds just fine... it's actually already bigger than most of them... had to clean pasty butt from about half of them... tonight...btw..

I love my turkeys. I have three two Blue Slates and idk a black hen.. asking advice. . I'm torn. . They are maturing at about 4.5 months now. I'm afraid they are about to get to be a challenge. .. idk.. Should I sell them and focus on my chickens? I'm sitting at 32 with 11 more on my bater. There is no way I could eat them. If I sell them, what's a fair price? I hatched them with my hen.. I think it's two hens and a Tom.
I'm torn...

So finally arrived home, catching up on my reading.... Lots going on! Visited with the birds, but they were already roosted and were not excited to see me. My ancient dude (my cat) was happy to see me though :)

Ralphie - Those turkeys of yours just keep getting more interesting! They were a neat flock of colors before, and it's really nice to hear what color they really are (as identified by the expert). I really hope you keep Ginger, I love the varieties he can produce (and I don't think there were very high odds of JJ & Ethel making them). You have miracle turkeys in Ethel and JJ :) We'll all be lining up to beg for eggs in the spring!

Ron - I don't know if I could give up my turkeys, I like having both chickens and turkeys since they are so different in personalities.

I'm sorry you lost a baby :( that's always hard, especially when they're so sweet and tiny. I wouldn't worry too much about mixing the ages though. I often have babies in the brooder that are up to a month apart in age. Of course, I watch them closely when I first integrate them together but it usually works well. I had a one month old marans pullet who took it apon herself to mother and raise a group of ameraucana chicks. It was adorable lol.

As for the turkeys, I couldn't part with mine, I love them so much! I don't know what s fair price would be but I paid $25 for my Adam (6 month old tom) and that didn't seem like a bad price at all. The rest, I raised myself.

Ron i echo what they said. Sorry, you had a loss, but with birds they happen a lot. Some just fail to thrive after only 21 days inside an egg.

I have had all age groups together and have not had a probelm. I watch them just incase, but it is never a problem.

I would never get rid of my turkeys and keep the chickens. That is backwards in my world. If one had to go it would be the chickens. The turkeys are just tooo cool!

I love my chickens, but my Lappers are more like pets at this point. Couldn't get rid of them!
Chaos. ..lack of light this time of year really limits my activities! I just loose all momentum when I get home & it's dark. :(

Ralphie, is Ginger having his photo shoot today? Hope you get the perfect glamour shot! :D

I wish, I am on Babysitting duty again today. This is my last day of it in the foreseeable future! I am hoping to have the photo shoot tomorrow. Hopefully, Ginger will get all spruced up and in his best feathers for it.

I am feeling bad I did not f\lock up Ethel's babies last summer and let them free range. The four she had were so different there is no telling what they might have been now. Next year Ethel's eggs will be handled with extreme care and her babies will be locked up until they are full grown!

I think Ethel needs her own brooding room. Do you have a spare bedroom she could move into? :D

Third day of rain. Ugg! Chickens & turkeys don't seem to mind. However, the turkeys needed to remark on my goloshs! Got a yard full of fashion critics!

Speaking of rain. I drive 40 minutes down the mountain to pick my kids up from my mom's house and find out once I get there that we have a freezing rain advisory until 10 pm. I'm not even leaving here till 8-ish. Yay :/
