A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

He probably has bronze in him Bb ee

I think he has a split of some kind in him, based on his color. I am not sure what you are pointing out in the wings.

I see no indication of slate or barring, but I am on my Iphone and I could miss something easily enough.

I would not breed him though. Baased on Belly buttonness. While I might breed Ginger or sell him for breeding, he is not a complete belly button like Penguin, he is more of a belly button follower.

I also would like a chocolate turkey, I am not sure I want it introduced as strong into the bloodlines as that bird would, I would rather get it as a "rarity" and not breed it in. But that is just me.

That is another reason to nver breed with Penguin, I do not want the limited colors he gives me when I can get them other ways, without getting so many. Of Course, not everyone is lucky enough to have a JJ and Ethel to give them tons of rare birds.

Beings I am on my Iphone (with a keyboard so I can really type, while DW sleeps my day away ,,,sigh) it is too hard for me to access the caculator, and I cannot remember all of Gingers offspring possibilies but as I recall bred to the the red blue bronze I get some babies JJ and Ethel cannot give me.

Why is it while on vacation all I can think of is getting incubators set up and collecting eggs to hatch?

I am afraid Memphis is right and I am addicted to and failing Turkey math.

I have nesting coveys to make, I have breeding pens to make, I should not be here!

Of course, once I am hitched to Carrie, I will have unlimited funds to do these things. I will be able to fly across the country in our private jets delivering and picking up colors I do not have! I can foresee a flock of thousands in my future!

Ralph - sounds like you are having a good trip, even if you are craving turkey pens and incubators :)

It has been so windy, cold and rainy since I got home last week - I really am craving a dry day so that I can go out and play with them. They are not enthused about the wind - the water doesn't bother them - but the gale-force winds seem to make them think twice about running around.

I am missing the kind of dry days that we had a couple of weeks ago.....

I didn't notice the tail, but I see slight barring on his upper wing. I already bred him, most of his sons turned in to thanksgiving dinner, all except one.

The banding I see is the narrow black or navy band on the lower or inside tail feathers, it is between the two tones of browns. I did not see it on the wings. BUT I am not lucky enough to see it in person. I know how hard it is to get a camera to pick up those subtle tones. Once Carrie says "I do" I will be bale to afford a $50,000 camera that will pick those shades up. I would gladly fly to your place and take pictures of your belly button for you.

Fiesty sorry about your crappy weather. I know turkeys locked up are not happy turkeys. I expect to have most of them raising the middle toe to me when I get home because of their time in lock up..... I still laugh when I think of them raising a middle toe at me Chaos!! That was a classic.

Hey Ralphie! Hope ya'll having a good time down here south of the Mason Dixon! Weather is nice! You wearing cowboy boots yet? I'm hoping you treat yourself go some down home cooking while in Tennessee! It usually amounts to fried or cooked in lard! I forgot about the railing at the Ryman! Perfect for turkey perching!

What do you mean your failing Turkey Math! Your our Poster Boy!

If you need me to bail you out of jail for invading the zoos turkey pen, just pm me, I can be there in 3 hours!

You know, if you certify JJ as your emotional help bird he could go everywhere with you. He could wear his customized Flight Suit so there are no unfortunate accidents while at the Ryman! !

that's a good looking chocolate tom.

If he is showing sone light barring in the wings he is a "dirty" chocolate. Has a brinze cross in his background.

If you breed him to chocolate hen will still breed pure. All chocolate poults.

My chocolate Turkey have the barring. Only pure I know of are at porters.

Here's another genotype question for all the gene experts. Is there anyway to tell if a bird is split to anyhing?
As with all worthwhile questions, the correct answer is "it depends". In this case, it depends on the way the gene is expressed, there are 3 broad categories:
Dominant - always expressed in the phenotype, hide all other variations
Recessive - only expressed in the phenotype if in the homozygous state (2 copies). Never hides dominant traits.
Partial or Incomplete Dominant - Expresses differently if there is 1 or 2 copies of the trait. Perfect example of this is blue/black/splash.

Only true recessive traits can "hide" behind a dominant trait. They may pop up randomly in a population where the normal trait is dominant. In this case, there is no way to tell by the phenotype if the bird is split because the recessive trait is completely hidden, the phenotype is the same whether the recessive trait exists in the genotype or not.

Reality is birds is that many traits are partially dominant and so produce some evidence in their existence. How the trait is expressed is dependent not only on whether there is one or 2 copies, but what other genes are modifying the expression of the gene in question. Then you have the fact that some genes express differently in males vs females, and probably the modifier genes are affected by the gender also.

Finally, at least in chickens, there are so many mutations of some genes that you have a heirarchy of dominance. The example I'm thinking of is chick down color. Dominant White covers Extended Black, that covers Wheaten, then all the other colors, like Wild Type and Brown. The modifier genes or barring, BBS blue, self-blue (lavender) and others, make this even more complicated. Chick down genetics are heavily studied and fairy well understood, but other traits like brown egg color and dwarfism (bantams) are poorly understood at best. In these cases, I have no idea what a "split" might look like, it would depend on the traits involved, I guess.

Hey everyone, I've been awol the last couple days, life is busy. My car died and we're broke so trying to find a way to replace it without breaking ourselves.

Unfortunately, that money order that I'd said never came, finally did come. Turns out that the lady was delayed due to a death in the family so now i must relinquish my third incubator. That's ok though. It's not a great incubator and i have permission from hubby to save any money i make from selling chicks and poults to buy a cabinet incubator :) i just have to put any extra money towards whatever car loan i end up having to get.

Speaking of cars, my hubby was working on my car, trying to fix it (unsuccessfully unfortunately) and Eve decided to try to help lol

ETA: picture won't upload so I'll have to do it later
