I understand turkeyParents.
I am going to look for a bourbon red. I will put my best man on it...Holms get too it!
I sure wish I knew how fertile JJ is. If I could use him longer I would.
My wife asked me how many more "breeding coops" I needed to make... I avoided answering her. If she knew it would not be pretty.
I might breed Porter beings I have to hold him for a while for Coffee.
Also,, ( trumpets blowing) I think I have found a home for Ginger. An old guy and If I call him old you know he must be really old, called me and wants a turkey tom for a pet. I told him about Ginger and how he could not breed him due to the eye problems. He said sounds perfect for me, I am an old bachelor with lots of medical problems myself so we should get along great.
He has a couple geese, chicken and peacocks for Ginger to hang out with, He said he will be here to get him in a couple weeks. SO Ginger's head is safe for now.
What I said is that Porter keeps his breeding toms until they are 3 or 4 years old. Others have said that their fertility goes down after that, I did not. My current tom was giving me 50% fertility at the end of his age 3 breeding season. In my opinion it had nothing to do with the fertility of his semen and all to do with him just playing around on the backs of the hens and never getting around to actually breeding them. To me it doesn't matter which is the reason as he will not be given an age 4 breeding season. I have had other toms in the past who were good and fertile well after their age 4 breeding season.
The best way to get a Rusty Slate tom this year is to get a Bourbon Red hen and breed her to Sidekick. A mating between a Self Blue and a Bourbon Red will produce 100% Rusty Slate poults and will introduce fresh blood into your flock.
The second I saw the post earlier I was looking for u and I found a few but they were toms.
While Ralphie does want a hen, he does have Self Blue hens that he could breed to a Bourbon Red tom or maybe you could creative and get semen from a Bourbon Red tom and use artificial insemination on one of his Self Blue hens. Either way it will create 100% Rusty Slate poults.
