That is how I wound up this white Turkey, Wednesday when I went to the feed store and good thing this was the last one left

Ya it happens

I had some reading to catch up on - it has been so busy here, I've fallen behind! I'm just loving all the baby pictures - looking forward to this weekend's batch of pics :D. I might be brave today and go to the feed store, so far I've not set foot in there since they got chicks (I've been sending DH so I don't have to test my willpower and use Ralph's fabulous marital bliss advice). Coco is officially broody now - she managed a spectacular hiss/tail fan and fluff when I tried to shoo her out of the nest box today. Yikes - I've never heard either of the girls make those noises. She was really grouchy when I ousted her, but didn't manage to get any good bites in. Poor BIg BIrd is going to have trouble getting in there now :/. I have no fertile turkey eggs since the boys reside on the other side of the barn - would she hatch chicken eggs if I can't discourage this?

Memphis - I love how your neighbors come and visit your birds. I really want a SS, they are so pretty and seem to have great personalities. My ladies are all super friendly, but you can never have too many friendly chickens right?

Ralph - Loved the SS pics! Any new baby pics to share? I had another giggle being reminded about your marital bliss article - I will never let DH read that.... I employ those tactics occasionally!

Aurora - What babies are hatching this week? Is Pebbles still abstaining from broodiness?

I am thankful that my feed store (Tractor Supply) has a six chick minimum, because I know I just can't add six more. Plus they never get any breeds in that I want. Usually just production layers and meaties. But if they ever got something good, I'm sure I would convince myself that I could fit six.

As it is, there is a feed store half an hour away that has no minimum chick purchase. I rarely go to that area. But a week ago I was passing by, so I stopped in. Look what followed me home:

Salmon Faverolle. I named her Clarabelle.

I want Speckled Sussex, too.... I always did think they were pretty, now you all are making them sound like the be all and end all of friendly chickens.

Now I gotta go back and find that Marital Bliss article...

Finnie - She's really cute :love That 6 chick minimum saved me today :). Managed to get out without chicks because I couldn't justify adding 6 more (Tractor Supply). I didn't go to the smaller feed store today, because I happen to know that they have no such constraints and I would have been in trouble lol.

Coco is really getting into the nasty-broody thing, I removed her from the nest box so that I could clean the barn.... I was grateful for my gloves

. I have no fertile turkey eggs since the boys reside on the other side of the barn - would she hatch chicken eggs if I can't discourage this? Turkeys hatch and raise chicks really well. I actually prefer the first birds they hatch to be chickens, they have a better chance if sitting the 21 days over the 28 days..

Ralph - Loved the SS pics! Any new baby pics to share? I had another giggle being reminded about your marital bliss article - I will never let DH read that.... I employ those tactics occasionally! I have new babies hatching as we speak. It is so amazing you happen to ask on a day I have birds hatching! What are the odds of that happening?

Aurora - What babies are hatching this week? Is Pebbles still abstaining from broodiness?

I had a wild turkey hen wander into my yard today/ I got the phone and took pictures as she wandered all over. Finally I noticed something wasn't quite right and then I saw she was running into things. She was blind. One rodeo and flyiing feathers and some blind flying that ended by smacking into a tree I had caught her and put her in the dog kennel. Man they are strong! Stronger than my geese. I didn't know they had spurs.

So her eyes are large and dark and moist. No lesions or bubble or any thing weird. Her feathers are rich in color and shine. No injury seems to be done to the eyes. But she is blind.

Wow.

You probably should contact your local DNR and find out what you are legally required to do in that situation. They would probably require you to turn her over to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. I think those people can keep them in captivity if it is impossible for them to be released into the wild.

Penny Hen....poor bird. She's lucky you caught her. Poor thing. Keep us posted.

Ralph...your article is great!!

I'm planning to get more chicks. Traveling at the end of the month so I'm putting it off till the first part of May. It's killing me.

Spent most of the day in the yard today. Spent more time than I needed to watching Annie hunting bugs. She stalks them, then gets stock still and grabs them. Quite entertaining. I've never seen Daisy do that. I was sitting in my lawn chair listening to the baseball game. Daisy was perched on the arm as usual. Guess she'd rather be a lapped than a hunter.
