A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Wow Mimsy....he did change quickly! He is quite handsome. Love his barring. Beautiful.
Thank you. He was sold to us as a standard bronze but that barring was showing when he was just a few weeks old and looked really odd compared to the other bronzes they had. Not sure if he's mixed with something else or what. I don't have any knowledge on turkey colors/types.

If you want to learn about about turkey colors and varieties, here is a good place to start.

Oh yea, I've booked marked that site. I love it and have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the different colors. Of course I wish there were even more pictures at all different ages and angles. Better yet, I'd like to be close to a place with all them so I could go look in person.

If we were going with my completely uneducated guess I'd say he's probably a barred bronze. I don't have the experience with turkeys to really know a lot though.

We got him to gobble by whistling the theme to Zelda though. :) It especially upsets him if he hears it coming from the bathroom, since it's a high up sound I guess.

Here is another site to check out. It doesn't have as many turkeys but lots more poultry.

Yet another site to look at turkeys.

Knucklehead doesn't appear to be as "Bronze" as Feedman's bird. I'm agreeing with Ralph...black barred.

I really like Feathersite. Especially the way he describes the temperament of the birds. And will site personnel experience. Fun site to snoop around on.

Still nothing but rain. Had the turkey hens out to forage in a light mist. Whimps lasted about 10 minutes then retired to my dry back porch overhang. The chickens are just trudging through the mud. Doesn't bother them at all

We went out and picked up two 50 ft rolls of 6 ft high chicken wire today. We now have to make a run for the turkeys since they keep on "visiting" the neighbor's backyard. I don't think he appreciates their company. They'll still get to get out and free range whenever I'm going to be stirring out there keeping an eye on them but they need a way to get out during the day. It's starting to get really rather hot and I can't keep them in the coop all day. Do you think 100 ft of fencing will give them enough room to relax outside?

Aurora.... if you divide your 100 feet of fencing into four 25 foot sides you'll be providing the 650 square feet of lounging space. Divided by however many turkeys you have....which I've lost track of! I'm going to say it should be a nice pen for them.

Couple things I do in the hot & humid south:

Obviously shade is huge
I have misters along one section of fencing & the birds will hang out there.
I hang box fans on their coop to keep the air moving.
I have a small kiddie pool. All chickens & turkeys will stand in it. Just about 2-3 inches of water. The turkeys will actually lay down in it & throw water around like a dust bath. I empty this each evening due to poopies!
I also provide several 2x4 roosts by the misters in the shade. These are only a foot off the ground but they do use them.

Heat scares me...I try hard to keep them comfortable.
