A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Somewhere on line is a "scholarly" work that outlines
This concept. It's a proven concept.
People who breed to the SOP,should be fairly familiar with birds that don't measure up. This is normally (IMO) caused by a bird reverting back to type. To fix traits you have to cut down on the genitic diversity, otherwise recessive dormant genes will get together in the right combination and become DOMINANT in expression.
Alot of the historical breeds started out as landraces. Then they tried to "IMPROVE" with the introduction of other breed characteristics

I actually read an article on that same thing. It was talking about the new species man is responsible for. Of course, part of the problem of telling when we have a new species is the point we decide it is sufficiently different from the parent to be called a new species. But over many generations it is easier to tell.

One example they used was a mosquito species that came about by mans actions. During WW2 some Mosquitoes followed people into the tunnels used as bunkers during air raids. Those mosquitoes became trapped in the tunnels and have evolved to the point they can no longer reproduce with the above ground mosquitoes. Therefore becoming without a doubt a new species.

When dealing with "breeds' which are a less definite point than a new species.

Improving is a point of view. I am up with man, many greenies are down with man and any changes to nature are wrong. Of course, they refuse to look at history and realize if we had not changed nature the planet would support about 1/10 of us.

I assume they all think they will be the 1/10 that would make it on there own. Based on what I have seen from city people coming to the country and trying to raise their own food like we do, they would not be in the 1/10th...

Now speaking of a specific Turkey that has been changed by selective breeding...... I was attacked yesterday again. My crime this time was throwing a scoop of starter into her dish for her babies! She has decided to take over the SS run. The chicks were on the far end of the run. I simply threw the scoop of feed towards the dish as I did not want to upset her......

She came flying out of the run, hit me in the legs, I put the scoop down to stop her and she backed off and flew into my gut, ( a large target). She chased me 30 feet or further out of the run. then she turned around and went back to the run. I let my guard down and she made another airstrike on me!

By then she went back and there was a turkey near the run entrance. She ran that turkey the same distance the other direction. She is by far the meanest mother I have seen. I am actually kind of hoping the Goll Darn feral cat comes at her babies. The cat will be dead, it is not that large but refuses to go into my traps.

I got my new garage brooder done and the crowded poults moved into it yesterday. After spending a lot of time looking for my bag of zip ties, I gave up and went to HD and bought some more

I don't know how I lose stuff all the time. Here's the before and after pics. Oh, and I found just what I was looking for on Amazon, a thermostat that you can plug appliances into. Several reviewers were using it for brooders, too. I ordered 3 of them. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V4TJR00/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
In case anybody wants to check it out.

Not bad!!! I thought for about 30 minutes I would let one of the saipan that has gone broody have some eggs to hatch. After 30 minutes i decided to go double check, she was on another nest. I collected all the eggs and I hereby publicly declare I WILL NOT waste another egg with a broody hen. Its incubator or the icebox from here on out!!

I like your brooder solution. And I'm with you on the zip ties. I finally started putting them in the front seat of my truck, and forbid ANYONE to touch them.lol Keep us updated on how the thermostat works out. I have background in HVAC so I understand how its made. Im curious to know how responsive it is and wether it holds up.I hope you have positive results!!
