A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have never seen the turkeys play keep away, that would be cool.

I lost the nest the two hens and Sidekick were sitting on last night. The birds were all off and safe, the turkey eggs are gone, but there are some chicken eggs in there. Some are broken open. I found a pile of poop the other day that appeared to be buried by a cat family member. The poop was between a quarter or a half dollar piece and about 3 inches long. The scratch marks are about 2 feet around. It is a big pile.

I am thinking I have a lynx or bobcat here. I am not sure a cat would eat eggs. The turkeys were all safe, but nervous this morning. It is trail cam time again. I may have to do some serious trapping. Luckily I locked up the hen with the 2 chicks in Lizzies cage last night.

I hate predators!
Cut up some short pieces of grass (1/8" to 1/4") and drop them into the brooder that has poults in it and you will get to watch turkeys playing keep away.

Guaranteed that cats will eat eggs.

Hi R2elk! Been wondering how all your poults are coming along. Is it hot in your area too? Whats your take on Sidekick? Im finding his behavior extremely entertaining!

Over 100° here today. The poultry all hole up in the shade.

While rare, it is not new for a tom to sit on a nest. I had a Bourbon Red tom that sat on a nest for a week or so. It ended badly with broken eggs.

The DW finally discovered where I had the turkeys hid.She never noticed there were two more than I was supposed to have....he he he
Now if I can slip the 100 quail eggs past her next week I will be in the clear.
The turkeys were gobbling and doing there strut, she ate it up. :) I told her they were for ornamental purposes,I wanted midget whites for the freezer. She never batted an eye. Life is good. :)

I have two royal palm turkeys today. Well, really I'm sure they're the neighbor's turkeys. Two jakes. They are very pretty. They've never been over here before, but I don't think the neighbors are feeding their animals very well right now. Their potbelly pig keeps coming over and cleaning out my feeders and I've been feeding their pekin ducks sporadically for over a year. I think the turkeys wandered further than usual looking for food and when I went out and filled the feeders for the day they were right on them. I don't mind as long as it doesn't become a usual thing (or if the turkeys just move in and stay - that's happened before with their birds too, it's how I got my first chickens). I'm going to need to tell them they have to keep the pig penned up though - it's been cleaning out my feeders and I can't afford to keep feeding a pig that's not mine. Plus it's a boar and isn't friendly toward humans - the last thing I need is to get gored when it's older and doesn't like me chasing it off from my feed.

Why does a Tom sit on eggs? I had never heard of this before. I can believe it would end badly. I cannot believe he went from baby sitting to wanting to hatch eggs or golf balls, Sidekick was never the sharpest knife in the drawer but this is a new low.

I am so glad you have successfully pulled this off. I am thinking I will have whites for the freezer next year too if my Porter poults stay living. Mailing eggs really takes something out of them, even with the vitality of the chicks/poults, I think. I have lost a couple poults from his eggs and not all hatched. I am not sure what is a better way to bring in new blood. The best I think is finding a breeder around here to buy from.

BTW How did you get them to put a show on to melt her heart?

You could always eat the potbelly.

X2... err,, X3.... Small pigs are tender too, Pyxis.

My turkeys do not move more than 100 ft all day, except for Ethel and her babies and JJ who will come to the deck to see company if when we have people over. I really do not feed them much this time of the year. However, their 100 ft seems to contain my garden. I doubt I will get a tomato of my own all year.

I have a text from Coffee she wants to post here. Her internet is so screwed up. Dish TV is raping them with poor service and high prices, she says she can read but not post. I will try to paste and copy it here from my phone.

I know why u gave me Porter because he is high maintenance and a drama queen. Lol.. He is mad at me because Lily keeps taking off, she showed up here for about an hour today then left again. He screams at me like it's my fault and I should be making her stick around. So I walked him over to the strawberry patch and he got excited and stopped screaming at me for a couple minutes , after he was done with his strawberries he started screaming at me again. I tried telling him it is his job to keep his women around not mine but I think he disagrees with me.

They treat Porter to strawberries all the time. It seems to be his favorite food. I doubt they will ever get another strawberry of their own again...
