Glad you could join us! Welcome

Are you going to let them raise a family or hatch them yourself? (notice I did not give you a choice to just eat them)..

Aurora, my uncle is in southern PA. About 20 miles due esat of Gettysburg. He called this morning & they changed the forecast fro 12-20 to 12-18. LOL!

RJohns, you get any snow over ther? Feedman, what did you end up with?

My callycanthus, a little understory tree, is in bloom. Beautiful with a dusting of snow.

We're looking at 8"-14" now. It's a winter storm warning now instead of a watch.

Good luck Aurora. We got of easier than they predicted here. Hoping the same for you.

Welcome ScottishKate. Post some pics, would love to see your turkeys! And yes, turkeys are "funny"....mine are highly amusing. Quite the characters.

my BBB started laying
wee.gif

First egg Saturday was 3 oz, Sundays was 3.6 OZ.. the yolk is a very pale yellow and I can not find the bullseye/white spot in either egg to check if they are fertile... Is it possible that since she is just starting the white/bullseye spot could be missing? or since the yolk is so pale I just can't see it.. when they cook up the yolk is almost the color of the white... I ate the eggs after I took a pic, but the phone ate the pic LOL
she is so big she rarely leaves the coop so she is just eating broiler grower (can't find any organic turkey/gamebird with in 2hrs), meat scrapes, BOSS, mealworms and what ever greens I can find to bring her .. grit and oyster shell in a dish.

As an adult she does not need grower feed. Since she is laying and is a BBB, I recommend a quality 16% protein layer feed. You also need to make sure that she gets regular daily exercise even if you have to take her for a walk.

BOSS and mealworms should be considered to be treats and should never make up more than 10% of her total diet.

I suspect that you are having a hard time finding the white spot due to the paleness of the egg. Introducing some rabbit feed or alfalfa into her diet may help add a stronger color to the egg yolks.

If your tom is also a BB, I would not be too hopeful of fertile eggs without artificial insemination.

I will give her layer now that she is laying
The treats are about 15%.. I'll cut back
I'll give her some alfalfa.
Mate is a Nari Jake.. he has a lot to learn, I haven't seen a succesful mating. I removed her from him to let her heal a couple of weeks ago.. and have a hen saddle on the way

and thank you so much for the advice

I would cut back further than R2elk said even. I would force her to fast now and then. I do that with my toads. I do not want large fat storage areas on them. Fasting seems to help them, and it sounds better than saying "starve them".

Make sure they have lots of water they need it. I feed very low protein half the time to the toads, Think Oats....

They are so efficient with their metabolism everything becomes nutrients ie fat on them and they need tons of water.

I have been feeding her, the lizards and the CX 2x a day.. it was 20 min worth and I cut it back to 10 min.. the BBB is getting about 1/2 cup of fermented feed... which = about 1/4 cup of dry feed 2x a day... trying to get her to look for food, however since the mating attempt she has sore and not as active.. but it is healing up nicely .. she used to follow me and now she is having trouble getting over the 2x4 threshold out the hoop coop... I help her over and then my back needs help
I hope she lasts long enough to get some poults before I have to send her to freezer camp
I change the frozen water 4x a day

thanks for advice :)
