A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I had a poultry that was a runt last year. The hens had just gotten up from the nest and it was 100°F outside, so the doghouse was sweltering, and thus little guy hatched out alone. When I found him, he was close to death and had severely heat stroked to the point that his little bug eyes were just rattling around and his body had gone limp. I immediately put him in the Hatcher at 97°F and bumped up humidity, and after several hours and some nutridrench, he came around. He survived, but was always runty.

Any better today? The sun is shining here on and off. They say NO rain, but I don't think I believe them.
Much better today... Got the frame for the "Ark" built and am so disappointed to find out its only 5'9" tall. According to the circumference calculator on the web it was supposed to be 8' tall. ARG! Guess I gotta duck, but DW can walk in without worries as she's 15" shorter than me.:barnie:hit:oops:

What would cause one turkey poult to grow slower than all the rest? My one little "chocolate" poult from Porter's is probably half the size of the others. Sometimes I look in and he looks like he just can't keep his eyes open and is SO tired (then I panic that he's going to die on me too) and other times he's up, running around and eating just fine. He's closer in size to the young "Smurf" that I picked up at the swap this weekend then to his bothers and sisters.
I seem to have at least one runt in every batch... I move the runt to the batch 4 weeks behind and then can't figure out which one he/she is. I guess that is a good thing.:old

R2, what would a wild tom mated with a nari produce as off spring? Today, I came across Sam and she had some poults that clearly are not hers and look to have nari influence. The term "I break for Turkeys" is quite real... As I had poults on both sides of the road today and they couldn't figure out what to do. Two ran to my right while Sam went left. I stayed put for a few minutes and low and behold those who went right came back across the street. My neighbor's driver thought I was a nut just sitting there waiting for the poults to figure it out.:pop

Most days I love being vertically challenged! lol

Hey guys, if you had a broody chicken raising poults that were for sale, what's the earliest you would sell them out from under her? Would it be a mean trick to take them away when she's not even had them for two weeks? If it's not long enough, does that mean she will stay broody and go back on the nest? Or should I not sell the poults until she's ready to ditch them?

Aurora....how is the little point doing?
Rjohns.... who is Sam?

Last I looked, he was doing fine. Running around, eating, and even did a little happy jump with flapping wings. I think he'll be ok but I'm still watching him close. The other 3 from Porter's are almost twice his size now. Those 3 are little love birds and any time I walk by their brooder, I can see them in there poised to jump up. I open the door and end up with all 3 on my hands, arms, or shoulders lol.

I've been meaning to find and start reading this thread for a while. We got out first turkeys 8 weeks ago and 5 more 2 weeks later. They are all together now and outside and we love them! Had planned on selling some but can't do it now lol. They discovered how to get on trampoline yesterday. Apparently its where the cool turkeys hang out.
