A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I was going to put a harness on Romeo for when he meets the girl scouts today.....he disapproved. I put it on and it looked like it was going to work great! One leg and one wing through a gap in each side. Nope. He started freaking out about it, pulling his wings through and ended up flopping on his back in the mud :he meanwhile the other tom was thinking that something was wrong with Romeo so he was going to step up, kick him while he's down and take over the flock View attachment 1192454 I rescued Romeo and took that harness off him and he went flying at the younger tom and kicked his butt back in to submission :rantso THAT idea is out the window. I do have another harness that's made a different way that might be more comfortable for him but now I'm not sure I want to try it lol

Well yesterday I got to see the birds execute the predator alert plan, first hand. I was in the pasture and had one of the migrating red tails perch in a tree just outside the lower pasture, apparently he was planning on a wild turkey snack along his journey. Three of the wilds popped up and took flight over both pastures. They fly incredibly well.

My rooster sounded the alarm and total chaos broke out. Apparently everyone is assigned a specific shelter and is required to use it. Had a chicken 18" from the door of one shelter, ran all the way across the pasture to it's assigned shelter. It took less than maybe 10-15 seconds for everyone to either be in their designated shelter or inside the circle of Toms. Who, of course, were all on full display. The wilds landed, gobbled at my Toms and ran up the mountainside. The red tail stayed in the tree for a good ten minutes and then decided to move on.:yesss:

Good that every one listened

I like my turkeys but I miss my lappers and Snitch is just not into being a lapper.

I am starting my next batch of eggs on the 12th of Dec. I might throw a few of the turkey eggs in a week earlier, just to see if I can get a lapper.. If the turkey keeps laying eggs between now and then..

I know one of them is "ready" I caught her submitting in front of 3 toms the other day. They all took their turns on her.. I called her a "slut" but it did not phase her one bit. I kicked the toms away and they all just went 30 feet and she laid down to please them all again. This was the semi-whatever Narrgy hen I have. I was going to try and breed her to the RP.. I guess with her I will take whatever comes out. I am betting she will have lots of kids all with different fathers the way she acts!

On the processing yesterday. The PVC cutter is way easier and faster than the axe. I will never go back to an axe. Rjohns when I said cheapy I meant it. No replaceable blade.. Here it is, I think I paid 7 bucks for it. The other was a picture I found online.

It was fast and easy. no mess, no missing The neck was severed every time in a second. The roosters bleed out into the bucket and the Turkeys just flopped on the ground. We did hold a net over them to limit the flopping some. I will be making a turkey size killing cone next time.

Also it appears one of my other Toms will be leaving. The nice Asian lady asked if we had a turkey for the Holidays... I have been thinking of getting rid of one more tom. I guess the blackest Tom will be moving to turkey heaven soon.

The two turkeys dressed out at 18 and 20 pounds without giblets. I was quite impressed with the size. The lack of breast is always surprising when compared to the BB. BUT the legs and thighs are huge on them. Much good eating for our family...

The corn for the last two months did its job. They had a lot of fat on them. I am going to ask my DIL save it if she does not want to roast with it on them.
I was at Menards today and they had the replacement blade for about $5.. the tool was about $14

good looking boys:thumbsup I need a warm day so I can process extra toms and cockerels, but trying to wait until the last batch is ready. I still don't know what I'm going to do. Thinking about thinning my breeds. RPs are my preferred bird but not hardy here. BRs are gorgeous but no hens. And they are bigger. IDK, but will figure it out.
Is there a trick to pulling out the pin feathers along the breast of the Tom I butchered?
