A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

R2elk....Sweetgrass, Narragansett & Mottled! Wow. That's going to be an eye full of color & pattern. You need to get your camera ready!

Aurora....will you get pencilled this year?

Rjohns...is there really a difference in taste? I'm curious if y'all think there is. I read an article once that claimed the BR won some kind of taste test.

So yesterday evening I was sitting on my front porch steps. The girls had been grazing. Daisy hopped up & was sitting next to me & Annie was laying at my feet. Was just getting ready to walk them back to the coop. A loose dog, part chow, came charging right at us with two kids chasing it. I jumped up & ran at it screaming which was enough to make it change course. It veered back across the street, saw a squirrel & chased after it. Freaked me out completely. Turned around & I swear Daisy was trying to open the front door with her beak. But that dam Annie ran at the dog right with me. What was she thinking? She is NOT as leery of dogs as Daisy, which doesn't sit well with me. Needless to say I ran them back to the coop. Never saw Daisy run so fast. Annie kept turning around & flapping her wings. Still freaked out I just grabbed her fat butt & hauled her back to the coop. That's the first time we've had a loose dog charge us. Daisy wasn't having any part of it, but that dam Annie was ready to challenge it. Uggg!

I really don't think breed impacts flavor. I like the RB as they are easy to separate and identify. I think flavor is entirely dependent on what they eat, how they are raised and age. The older the bird, the stronger the flavor. I might get some BBWs this year and see how they taste compared to my heritage birds.

Mud. They taste like mud compared. :lau. Well really water more like it truth be told. They are bland and ick. Cletis was the first heritage turkey we have had... and he was old. And both hubby and son the young immediately said when you gettin more turkeys to grow for dinners cause that bird in the other freezer needs to go. We have one bb up in mamas freezer still and they refuse to eat it now.

I raised BBWs. They free ranged and did not grow as fast or as big as others claim. I also did not have any health problems with mine. They were absolutely wonderful.

It's crazy... The city folk I tried to sell heritage birds to were all into BBs. When I grew my CX they tasted way different than what you find in the store, so I need to re-stock the freezer this spring.

R2, how old were yours when you processed them? Average weight?

I normally processed mine around 6 months old. The biggest tom ever dressed 34 1/2 lbs. but most of the toms dressed around 27 lbs. with the hens coming in, in the low 20s.

You can buy sexed BB and semi BB poults from Valley of the Moon Poults.

I agree, and the older the turkey the better it tastes. I even grow out roosters so they are older when I process them, because I like the taste of an older bird. The pressure cooker makes them all tender.

The Narragansett gene will be a hidden recessive so only the Sweetgrass and the Tri-Color Mottleds will show up this year.
