A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hi all, posting this link mostly for the beautiful picture of Meleagris Oscellata, mostly a body pic, showing the incredible colors on the body of the bird... It also includes a historical account of the Mayan involvement with the bird and its range etc. for those that have an interest in such things... http://www.mesoweb.com/pari/publications/journal/1604/OcellatedTurkey.pdf

12 out so far and moved to the brooder (since had been 48 hours). I got the room super warm and humid and added warm wet towels so humidity didn’t go below 75-80 as I moved them. There’s one that had just hatched backwards I left in there to dry off and see if it can walk. Two more just started pipping. Hopefully I can get more than a dozen out of my hatch!

Hello I have been selling my newly hatched turkeys to my feed store for 6 bucks he sells them for 12 bucks I do believe. So far we have sold about 30 birds, and have no more babies. I have 7 young males and 8 young hens (I was planing on expanding a little)They range from 2 to 3 months old, Im guessing. How much are these young birds worth? And is the deal on the babies fair?

So I’m up to 15 poults. This batch I numbered each egg and recorded date of lay with the numbers. So my hatch rates seem terrible but looking at numbers the abysmal hatch rate is from those stored over 10 days and used as incubator filler. 18% of my old eggs hatched. So makes sense that they’re bringing down my overall success % but figured I’d give them a shot since had them lying around. Going by ten day or less stored eggs I’ve had 85% of those hatch successfully alive with one dead at hatch. So I assume my main issue is old eggs. Just means I need more hens! Lol

Turkeys have been sleeping in their outdoor brooder to prepare them for the actual sleeping outdoors, waiting another three weeks to sit them outside, but their doing great in other words.

Well, on the babies, it seems like you are doing all the work, managing the breeding, feeding the flock, hatching the babies, and he is getting 50% of the money. But on the other hand, he provides an outlet you might not otherwise have. If you can't house 30 birds indefinitely, then guaranteed sales are important.

I sell my (1 week old) poults for $12 each on Craigslist, and add roughly $1/week that I raise them until they sell. (So I would sell a 10 week old for about $20.) But this year they are not moving very fast, and I have them stacking up a bit. So I have to weigh, is it more important to move them out at a markdown, or more important to reap as much money as possible to defray all the expenses? I have learned from past experience, that if I don't panic, they do all eventually sell. So I try not to mark them down to clearance prices unless they just get too crowded and I have to move them out.

Hope this gives you some perspective.

Well, there is a convenience factor to selling to a feed store
