A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

So still only the 4 from the incubator. Broody momma hatched one out and is being terrifyingly protective. I used this as a chance to steal her other 15 (yes 15) eggs away and put them in my incubator so I can candle them later and see if they’re viable. Doubtful though since half were stone cold.

So far she’s cooing to the poult and sitting on it. I put the feed/water on the ground level and backed away slowly seeing as she attacked the Tom and another hen for coming too close and was eying me suspiciously.

Fingers crossed I either get more hatch and/or she decides to be a good momma and maybe I’ll slip a few 2 day old broad breasted bronze from work under her and see if she’ll raise up a Christmas/Easter dinner.

Question: the nest box is raised up and so now the poult can’t get back to it. Should I set up a dog kennel and lock her and the baby in it or just give her an open dog kennel with some bedding and see how she does?

I would lock her in.. she will tramped the poult when she attacks
mine was overly protective and deliberately killed a week old chick when her poults were 3 days old.. yanked it through 2x4 wire and shook it like a rat...she also attacked everyone else within 20 ft .. I ended up blocking off 2x8' section of the coop and later access to a 8x10 run area. the last week I have been able to let her out with the others and she has settled down somewhat . last night I let her back in to sleep with the others.... The chickens steered clear and the turkeys were afraid to roost by her, but at dark they finaly went in and she was ok.....she hatched them on 6/20

Went out there to check on the poult and it was left lying dead on the ground in the coop. Was fine half an hour ago and I was going to herd and lock her outside away from it and just put the lone poult with my ones in the brooder. Delivery driver showed up and was busy keeping the dogs from following the driver home. Went back to check and it was dead. So far she’s killed 2.

Yeah not going to risk losing more eggs with her. Even though I’ve got terrible success rate with my incubator it’s still better than her mothering skills. Need some poult protective services as far as she’s concerned. Will be replacing her if I can find suitable hens.

PolarBerry Sorry to hear about your turkey hen, she sounds as bad as my broody chickens(at least yours didn't eat the babies shell n all when they were about to hatch) I was very happy that silver snake did such a fine job hatching hers. I have since taken them away and plan to try and tame them down so that they are not as wild as the snake. on a better note my hen Darling has a batch that is due in the next day or so, I am hopeful for at least a couple out of the 8 viable eggs, if all else fails I have the bator up and running..... Best of Luck with the ones in the bator

Ughh...sorry about the poult. Dang it....

So Alicia...sounds like you braved the Snake with no ill effects! Congrats! Have fun with the poults!

Aww yuck i am sorry! My broody again rp... i think tomorrow we are gonna slip a few rangers under her. I dont like the whole chicks with the turks thing but i have no turkeys anywhere near us to buy right now. And i cannot get her to break this broody. :/. She did beautifully with the other poults when the two mamas took them out in public this spring so here’s to hopin she will do the same with these. I just don’t know of anything else to do with her other than givin her a few babies. We thought bout dux. But then we would need build a duck home and work on fence and clearin brush down at the lagoon/pond for them. The fence isnt good enough all the way round in there to put the goats right now. Puttin them down there in the nettin would be ok but shelter... none... and it has been rainin for days and is suppose rain for days more. So goaties wont browse anyway right now. Ugh! Dumb dilemas.

And I fear Sam got taken by a predator... I have three of her poults hanging around the yard along with the new hen. She's trying to adopt the poults but they remember when she first showed up and Sam gave her what for... Right now two of the poults stick together and the third runs solo. The hen takes turns following but they simply aren't interested in her.
