A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hey guys. I know it's not the right time of year but does anyone have any eggs they could sell/ship? I lost Fred, lucky, and a little male I had in the last month. I still have the boy we took in but he attack my husband and I'm not sure if hubby will keep putting up with it. So now I have 6 females and now boys and I'm not sure what to do.

Post a wanted ad on your local craigslist and local Facebook. I often sell my excess toms in the spring just because there are always people who lose their tom during the winter.

I just looked on my local Craigslist and there's someone saying they have over a hundred turkeys near or above 20 pounds and only asking $25-$35 each. They also list 6 week old turkeys for $10. Do you think the males would be identifiable that young? I'm very tempted but don't know how I would be able to enforce any sort of biosecurity if I got one or two, I don't have a separate quarantine pen yet.

There is no time like a need to cause something to get done. Fortunately a quarantine pen does not have to be as big as a long term pen.

I can go out right now and pick out young toms among my 6 week old poults but that is because I have observed them and am familiar with their behavior. You may or may not be able to pick out toms from 6 week old poults. You should be able to pick out toms from the older group. My concern would be to make sure they are not broad breasted turkeys.

By all means get at least two for just in case problems.

Good luck.

I was thinking I need to get some good pictures of my turkeys up here and see if you guys can confirm/deny what I'm starting to think, that all my turkeys are girls. They are past 12 weeks, and none of them have displayed, all of them seem to have short snoods, no beards visible, and feathers still on the neck.
If they all are girls, will definitely want to get a few more just to get a breeder male, and replacements for the guests of honor for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I will try to get some good pictures this weekend when we move them to the new pen.

If you are movin them the week end... can the new ones go into a big dog crate or somethin for a few days and then into the old enclosure after? Miht not be super happy poults in a box for a few days but it wont kill them.

My turkeys are currently in an enclosure in my garage. I was hoping to get it completely out of the garage since my turkeys are going to their new enclosure, but that might be something to think about. I was just worried about having new birds near my birds without quarantine, because all my birds either I hatched myself or bought as babies.
