A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I put up a 2"x4"x6' welded wire perimeter fence. There are infrequent times when a turkey or two will sail right over the fence but they would do that with an 8' or 10' fence also. The key is that there is no top bar or rail. If there is a top bar or rail on the fence, the turkeys will choose that as a perch and will almost always get down on the wrong side of the fence.

I Just ask because we’ll be putting in an orchard area (eventually) and needing deer proof fencing. Figure if can also give the birds more room then it’ll make everyone happier.

Handsome boy PolarBerry! R2elk is right about the fencing. Daisy has flown over my garage. She can just hop on top of a 6' fence. Funny... Daisy likes to fly... Annie has NEVER flown. I wonder if she realizes she can fly. Daisy likes to fly about 4 feet off the ground the length of the yard. I think just for the fun of it. It impresses the neighbors when she does that in the front yard. If she gets too far from me while aimlessly grazing, she will fly back to me when I call her. She " comes" better than most of the neighborhood pet dogs. It sure is impressive to see such big birds go airborne. But, I'm easily impressed!

I was sitting on the front porch steps while the girls were grazing yesterday evening. Daisy ended up sitting next to me on the step. Still can't touch her, but she likes to hang out. Neighbor walked over to chat. He noticed when he spoke, she'd look at him. When I spoke, she would look at me. Completely freaked him out that the bird was apparently following our conversation. LOL!

Sure hopes she recovers Aurora.

Got a chance to see Airforce 1 land today in MEM. Happened to be out on the ramp. Third time I've seen it. Its always impressive. Would love to see the inside.

Reach out to your Senator. Tell him you'd like a tour next time it's in MEM. The Service frequently gives tours once the bird is empty and serviced. It's been a long while since I've had my tour.

The reason I put that fence up was to keep the deer out. Six ft. works because most of the does can't jump it and the fawns definitely can't jump it. Without any does or fawns inside the enclosure there is no incentive for the bucks to jump in. There were a total of two times that deer jumped in shortly after the fence was put up. Both times I was there to escort them right back out. That and the case of several trying to jump in at their normal entry point in the night and hitting the fence was enough to discourage any more attempts. I have not had any deer inside the fence in years.

deer keep hitting the 6' perimeter fence. Found a pregnant doe with a broken neck, one early spring morning. So far they haven't hit the electric poultry net.
The turkeys rarely fly over the 3' dividing fence, they get in the trees or on top of the coop and switch sides. There is a truck cap 4' away from the 4' electric net. They fly over and on top of that once in a while. So far they have just hopped back in.
When the turkey hen figured out the fake eggs she went over the 4' fence looking for somewhere to nest. I was home and escorted her back in. When I left her eggs she quit wandering off.
