A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

The turkeys have taken to roosting 18-20 ft up in the rafters of my coop. (pole shed for farm machinery converted to a coop)..... They seem to enjoy being up there as no one can bother them.

They get particular joy from bombing their human that forgets they are up their way to often. They go up there early in the day. I was fixing breeding pens and separating breeders yesterday.

There are a couple chickens that go up into the rafters, mainly those trying to avoid the breeding pens. One white legbar is up there all the time. I heard a terrible squawk from the rafters yesterday. A royal palm was bored. Bored turkeys are the devils hands. The turkey decided it would be fun to pluck the feathers from the legbars tail. The legbar after losing the feather, would move 10 ft or so down the rafter away from the turkey. The turkey would sit and look at the chicken with that smugly satisfied look they get. Then get up move ten feet down the rafter, settle in next to the chicken. The turkey then waited for the chicken to drop it's guard and grab another tail feather. This went of for about 4 feathers worth of fun...

I’d have a bunch of bald chickens if my turkeys had any say. One of my turkeys hens I call “turkey no tail” because she’s the bottom of the pecking order and they pecked her tail off... didn’t grow back after molt.

My chickens also have decided they have one not so favorite hen that they’ve given a toupee look to. She’s going to someone else’s farm tomorrow because I’m done with her... at the feed store she was all pecked to pieces and the others destroyed her rump so she also can’t grow a tail... and they gave her to me for free and now she’s getting a haircut from her Flock mates and is always so stressed out it’s for her own good. My australorps are asstralorps.

Everyone got pumpkins and tree branches to give them fun stuff to peck at in their runs.

Birds are worse than teenage girls to each other.

I need to put flight wire over the chicken pen... silly things keep flying out when they have everything they need in their new larger run (except total freedom). Silly chickens.

I’m thinking of making a semi movable turkey tractor out of some hog panels to give them the grass they so desire without allowing escape into the woods (also what they want).

The ducks on the other hand like staying put when given freedom.

Birds...
