A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

One picture turned out a little blurry but you can see two babies in it lol. She's a good mom so far, she's just not protective enough. I think that's why it worked out so well last year with the broody bunch. There other girls were more protective. But, that's why I give her cockerels.

Memphis I'm right there with you on the thin mints .They've always been my absolute favorite! I actually made a new cookie this Christmas that tasted very much like this mints. You can guess how long they managed to stay around....

Pebbles is still doing good. She has the little boys tucked under her nice and warm. I pulled one out last night to check on them and she immediately started talking to him to call him back under her :)
And the recipe for this faux Thin Mint is where??????

Ralphie,

I saw a couple years ago you mentioned a chick brooder that the chicks can see out of. I had been thinking about how to design a new brooder (I threw away the cardboard box... :p) Did you use plexi for a solid window? Or make a wire door or wall?

I’m going to put the brooder in the basement this year. It’s a living space and the warmest spot in the house, so maybe I could get away with a wire wall or door. I’m using a “mother hen” panel. Any pitfalls you can think of that I should avoid?

Corners. They can pile in corners.
I love mama heat pads, they work great for turkeys and chickens. A large aquarium might work as long as there is LOTS of ventilation and it's big enough.

Thanks Bantam :)

I’ll definitely watch the corners. I got the Titan heating panel and the chicks took right to it last year. I covered it with an old towel so it didn’t seem so sterile and hospitalish. I have no idea whether the babies would notice, but I felt it lacked a certain coziness. They made a real mess of it. I’ll need a new old towel this year. :gig

My first batch will be new and improved” Red Rangers. (“Color Yield” or something like that... dumb name, but they’re supposed to finish a week sooner than the Rangers) Anyway they will hopefully go straight to a tractor after brooding, weather permitting. They can test out my new brooder for the layers, mousers & poults. (Oh my!) ;)

Mine is rectangle and made with hardware cloth. The corner piling is not really an issue when they are use to you.

They are less skittish when they can see you. Of course, I raised them in the living room so they could watch TV with us....My wife was not a fan of my brooder...

I would show you a picture of what I made..BUT I have a turkey hen that thinks she is a Robin. I have the cages stacked in the coop.

The one I would have taken a picture of for you is on top thestack about 8 feet off the ground. As I got close I heard the tell tale hissing and saw the hen giving me the snake neck,

It appears I am incubating turkey eggs... I assume most are frozen and cracked, but heck if she wants to waste a month sitting in a nest that her babies have to fly out of...I wish her the best.....Stooopid bird!
