We had 40-something below, like, 15 years ago here... I was in bed, but the thermometer recorded it. It was cold enough in the morning. I am okay with having missed the hopefully once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience this historic event.

There have been two instances of -40°F sessions since I have been in Wyoming. The first one was here for several days. Six miles from where I was living at the time it was -40°F but it was only -20°F where I was.

Unfortunately I made a trip to Casper at the time. We were taking the old style weed burners and placing them under the oil pans of cars in order to get the cars started. Of course we also had to bring the car batteries inside to charge them enough to start the cars.

ARCTIC ASSAULT UPDATE:

I can't believe I am saying this, but the latest data indicates that we will be even colder than previously expected, especially tomorrow night. I think Chicago away from the lake has a shot at -30 degrees. Even worse, some areas in northern Illinois may be in the -35 to -40 range. Keep in mind, Chicago's coldest temperature EVER was -27. That record will fall. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Illinois is -36. I think that record will fall tomorrow night, somewhere west of Chicago. I expect this to be recorded in one of the small towns surrounded by corn fields in north central Illinois. You can be 80 or 8 years old. You've never felt cold like this if you've been here your entire life.

Wow, I do NOT envy you! And I was crying because it's so to FEEL like -35 here with the wind chill but you are actually supposed to get it! Closer the curtains, lock the doors, hide in a blanket fort and crank the heat!

Wow! I've NEVER been in weather that cold. I know Chicago is all over the national news. I didn't realize your eye corneas can freeze in that kind of weather. And not to take deep breaths for fear of damaging your lungs. Freaking me out!

I've never heard of those things before either! Scary what the extreme cold can do to you!

The first eggs from Lil and Mister are due this Saturday which means they'll hatch Friday. I have 5 from them that made it to lockdown

Hubby and I went for a hike up the hill today to try to get some pictures of the wild turkey flock out in the fields. Everything was beautiful with all the fresh snow on all the tree branches everywhere! Of course, I was plenty warm wearing his old military snow suit and combat boots lol. After trudging up that hill though, at an ever decreasing speed, I realized how horribly out of shape I am....and that the snow suit was TOO hot! I did get some nice pictures though and the trip back down the hill was better....when we weren't almost falling!

Well I almost missed lockdown on my next batch of turkey eggs....I was thinking lockdown was Thursday, um no, they are due Friday evidently I can not count..... so I was candling for giggles and realized we have babies shadowing and maybe an internal pip!

Lovely photos Aurora. Even if it made me put on a sweatshirt. The wild turkeys are cool. What the heck are they eating in all that snow? I'm going to show those pictures to the girls. They have no idea how spoiled they are!!

Aurora...you missed your chance to take the MIL for a hike. That may have made her realize how much she misses Florida.

She already misses Florida! But she could never go for a hike. She can't even walk to the car through the snow without sometime helping her!
Speaking of which, she goes back home today instead of tomorrow since the kids have dentist appointments and we'll be down that direction (BIL lives about an hour away). Most of the stuff that's been irritating me is petty, annoying things like turning off the porch light that's always on (it has a sensor), leaving the door open while she takes the did out or putting her little dog in her stroller and parking her at the table during dinner. That doggie stroller is constantly in my way but she has to have it! Grrr. I'll be so happy to have my house back tonight lol. I did manage to finish up 10 turkey saddles yesterday though hiding in the kitchen lol

Moral of this is "always" have a mission or duty you need to do down that way so you can take her home early...

Ha the Arctic blast missed us where I am in central Montana! I know it has been unseasonably warm and dry here. It's only gotten below zero for a couple days at a time. It's been downright tropical for Montana winter!
