A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Found 'em! Backyard of another neighbor. Bird owner wasnt home. By the time he got ahold of me it was was dark & they were 30 foot up a tree. But apparently they were in this yard all day. Well...we'll revisit the situation tomorrow.
May take Daisy down there. They might follow her. That or she'll run off with them & join the circus.
Never got above freezing yesterday. Our normal high this time of year is 60. 60!! What the heck!

Good luck on the hunt! Hope you guys manage to catch them!

It's a grand 8° here right now :( I'm tired this stuff. Spring NEEDS to get here! @memphis, you said the trees and flowers were blooming and blossoming already.... What is the cold doing to them?

I'm starting to dream like Olaf! Right now, summer only feels like a fantasy!

We all could use a dose of adorable this morning :)

Take Daisy with you,

Guineas bond very quickly with turkeys.

I am so enjoying the saga of the guineas. Can't wait for the next installment. Off topic, sort of, how much coop space do perhaps 2 turkeys need? I will likely let them free range as much as possible. Are they destructive in the garden or do they just scratch for bugs? So many questions for so early in the day!
Turkeys can dig huge holes to dust bathe in. They can eat a lot of vegetables. For some unknown reason they take pleasure in either clipping off or pulling up young onion plants.

I consider 10 sq. ft. the minimum coop area required per adult turkey. A lot of people do not keep their turkeys in coops. Mine have access to the coop but sleep outside in all kinds of weather. Their roosts are beside the coop so they are protected from the prevailing winds.

DH (who can’t sleep for coughing) says our low was -1 last night, so... major improvement! It’s +11 now. :ya It could actually get all the way above freezing if we’re really, really lucky. :highfive: (I’m apparently into emojis this morning.) TSC says it’s chick days. I’m willing to bet they’d put that off a couple weeks if they could. Betcha they end up brooding those wee babies themselves for a week or two at least. I might have to go have a look anyway. (Checks Rapid City weather...)

Brynn the boss cow is such a treat hog. :rant She tosses her head around trying to push the other girls away, hit me in the arm with her horn. It Didn’t really hurt but it made me mad. I popped her hard on the nose and yelled at her, stupid heifer. Eden wasn’t taking treats this morning anyhow so I just huffed away. I’ll sneak back later when Eden is done chewing cud and give her treats. :tongue

The poor chickens’ water bucket was frozen clear through. Their bucket de-icer burned out (my fault; it has no shut-off and I let the water level get too low :smack). So Amazon is, like, “normally we get things to you on time, but unfortunately this shipment is late.” HA! I can’t remember the last time they got anything to me in 3 days, let alone two. Stooped Amazon. Prime renewal is rolling around soon. We’re not renewing. They just keep getting worse and worse. (I’m having so much fun ranting... :p)

Alternate method to keep water from freezing.

R2, I’m thinking I’ll build my turkeys-to-be a three-sided shelter facing south for next winter like the cows have, only smaller:

I might (probably) put on a barn door for really bad storms. I have hardware to add one to the cow shed but the weather caught up with us and it didn’t happen. Now I’m thinking it was never necessary, not for the cows anyway. Maybe the turkeys don’t need one either... Any suggestions, sage advice, etc? I am busily over-thinking here... too much coffee...
