Where is your source for this false information? The other time I used it was to differentiate between Broad Breasted birds and real turkeys. While they are technically a variety, they can hardly be classified as one as they will not maintain their unique traits over generations.
If you don't think they can be properly classified as a variety, then they definitely cannot be classified as a separate breed.
Just because there are a lot of people who misuse the term breed in reference to turkeys is not an excuse for someone who knows better to contribute to the problem.
Many hatcheries raising broad breasted turkeys make the false claim that theirs are hybrids just like the claim is made that White Leghorns are hybrids.
Broad Breasted turkeys will breed true. Just because certain hatcheries breed separate lines of broad breasted turkeys, breeding different lines of the same variety does not make a hybrid. Their base is not like the CornishX which are a true hybrid and will not breed true.
