A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I need some help, does anyone know how to treat a case of blackhead... my Golden Narragansett Tom has caught it again (the first time he caught it, it didn't last long, and he was only doing yellow droppings)...
This time he has yellow droppings, lethargic, and losing weight (he is eating, just not as much as he normally would), he is 6 years old, and i do not want to lose him, as my flock follows him (he is currently the oldest one in my flock)...

And i know where he caught it from, he got it from a group of hens my mom and I picked up from someone who was selling hundreds of hens (they grow them up to the age of when they start laying, then sell them)... and apparently they were carrying Blackhead... he is a very important turkey in my flock, any advice is appreciated
You can do a search on BYC. Use the term blackhead and the user name of casportpony. This is one of the threads that the search will turn up.

@casportpony had dealt with this.

Good luck.

The treatment I use is:
  • Metronidazole (Flagyl) at ~23 mg per pound orally once a day for five days.
  • Enrofloxacin (Baytril) at 9.1 mg per pound by injection once a day for five days, or 4.54 mg per pound orally *twice* a day for 5 days.
  • Fenbendazole (Safeguard) at 23 mg per pound orally once and repeat in 10 days.
  • Fluid therapy - The sick bird will need at least 5% of it's body weight in fluids each day. This can be done by tube feeding.
The metronidazole and the enrofloxacin need to be ordered because feed stores do not sell them. Your other option would be to take the turkey to a vet.

I just got back home from helping my mom with some shopping, and its apparently too late now, he is dead... and yes i had him isolated for about about 2 days, the two hens he lived with appear perfectly normal, but i'll keep a close eye on them, as i don't want to lose them either...

Some people swear that red pepper helps. I add a heaping 1/4 cup to a gallon of feed and about a gallon of water... I soak it overnight. Never had blackhead so I can't say if it helps or not.

I am so sorry. :hugs May I suggest that you do a necropsy and check his liver and cecal pouches?
