A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I guess I didn't ask that right. Will the different types of heritage turkeys breed with each other? Like a silkie breeding with a polish chicken.
All domestic turkeys are the breed Turkey. All the varieties can be bred together although the BB varieties may need help via artificial insemination.

if I understand correctly all heritage turkeys are the same breed just different color varieties ...
Close. All domestic turkeys (heritage and BB) are the breed Turkey. The breed Turkey is currently broken down into Varieties. The APA has left open the possibility that the Varieties could be broken down into Colors at sometime in the future.

An example is that the Variety Palm could in the future be broken down into Royal Palm, Blue Palm, Lavender Palm, Red Palm, Chocolate Palm, etc.

Cindy....its a different perspective with "city" girls. Speaking of city folk....the neighbors are starting to stream in to meet the new girls. Across the board....they are stunned by their beauty. Well...sort of...they are impressed by their beautiful feathers! The girls are curious with visitors but not allowing themselves to be petted yet. So Daisy is taking up the slack. She's a total flirt! She knows she'll get a snood pet and most likely a treat!
And a bit of sad news. Her little white fluffy ancient dog buddy has died. The owners came down to let me know. If you remember, Daisy was the only other animal the spoiled little mutt didn't attack. They both got a hen hug amid tears. Loosing their dog was tough for them.
Poor doggie. :( It’s so sad when they go. They just don’t live long enough.

If you are referring to @memphis turkeys, one is a Penciled Palm, one is a Red Auburn and the other is possibly a Chocolate Palm.

Since they are all hens, no they cannot breed with each other. All domestic turkeys are the breed Turkey. All the varieties can be bred together although the BB varieties may need help via artificial insemination.

Thank you so much for educating me.I have read this forum for years but not posted.

Mowgli....glad your posting! It's easy to fall for turkeys. They are so engaging. Go over to Porters Heritage Breed Turkeys & check out all the different varieties. It's pretty amazing. So many varieties....so little time!
I purposely keep my flock small. Have the three young birds and my older girl Daisy. Easier to establish relationships with them.

Thank you .I am a newbie at turkeys and have fallen in love with my royal palms.I am hoping they breed next year but if I were to add another type of heritage breed any suggestions?
Where are you located? There are folks here in various locations who might be able to set you up with all kinds of varieties, depending on whether you’re close enough.

Any of you turkey experts know why my pet royal palm tom (8ish months old give or take)'s beard lost half its length and all the grey. It was getting almost to sticking out of his feathers and then one day (been like this awhile) it disappeared and is now only blonde, half the size, and not growing at all. He looks and acts super healthy. All the toms 2 or 3 months younger have their beards growing fine, he just went backwards lol. Any tips/ideas would be great! Thanks guys!
