I wonder whether you could cover the ground with something like this? I believe water will seep through it. It's not the fragile stuff you can buy at the local DIY stores. I don't know, though, whether piling gravel on top might not tear it... They're out of stock, but you can call and ask your questions & when they expect to have more--if you think it might work. I do think it would keep the earthworms, etc. underneath.

What is packed base rock? Why wouldn't gravel work? Large gravel not fine gravel.

I think she means what we call class 5 here, it packs tight and is nearly impenetrable.

You can use recycled concrete too.

Recycled asphalt would work too.

I'm not a fan. The stuff we have here doesn't compact as well as the concrete or granite from the quarry.

I think the white legbar rooster has taken the eye out on one of my Toms. I can’t prove it, but being a tyrant, I don’t need much proof.

I've also heard it called "dirty" rock.
It packs down pretty good over time just from rain. Almost concrete like.

I think we may put lime down, then landscaping fabric to keep the weeds and worms out. Then rock. There is a pile of red rock folks around here call red dog where my father in law lives. We may go get a bunch of it. Im going to call around and see if there is a quarry close by.
