A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Can y'all help me with some math? We are trying to get a permanent sleeping/at night pen for my turkeys and im having issues with square footage. I read its about 10sq ft per turkey in a night only coop. I am going to have 8 turkeys after the babies i keep are big enough. That would be 80sq ft i need, right? A 10x10 dog kennel is 100sq ft as well, right? So would 1 10 x 10 dog kennel be big enough as a night only pen for my turkeys?

Thanks. sorry if confusing. I am tired and have been trying to figure stuff out for a week. I am not interested in roosting them outside btw. Nothing against those of you who do, I just dont prefer it myself.
Turkeys need more room than that to properly get down from a 6' roost. Your pen can be fairly narrow but I would not make it any shorter than 40' long. I have watched my turkeys use as much as 70" to fly down from a 6' roost. The more distance they have to land, the easier it can be on their feet.

Another thing to remember is that as adults, turkeys do not tend to roost next to each other.

I have about 14 turkeys at the moment and they have a 10 x 14 coop with a roost at about 4.5 ft. 10 x 10 should be fine but the roost would have to be against the back wall and not very high up.

Are pencilled sweetgrass a thing? I cant find anything about them on a google search, but the breeder I got my 3 from said some of them are pencilled, and it made sense to me that one of the ones I got was pencilled. Her coloration has always been super different. I've never had pencilling though, so thoughts?

Both Semi-penciled and Penciled Sweetgrass exist.

Sorry that does not look like penciling to me. You can check out penciled and semi-penciled at Porter's Rare Heritage Turkeys.

Alright ty! I'll keep an eye on how she develops. Either way I really like how her pattern is turning out, super colorful compared to her siblings. The only reason I got the idea behind her being penciled is I saw another one the breeder was selling at a swap that she said was penciled and looked basically exactly like my kid, haha.

Many backyard breeders claim things about their turkeys that are not true. Check out all the false claims on eBay. I have seen hatching eggs from Tri-colors being proudly sold as Royal palms. I saw Narragansett hatching eggs being sold as BBB eggs. Of course the real winner was the guy sell hatching eggs from "Patriot Turkeys". Among the pics of the turkeys were some Blue Red Bronze, Rusty Slates and Red Slates.

Check with @OneMountainAcres and she can show you what both Semi-penciled and Penciled look like.
