Occasionally, and especially with girls that are new layers, an egg will reverse course and will start to be recoated with the next egg that is coming down the tract. It's possible that is what you saw, kautz62. I've never seen it myself, but I've heard they can even have a second shell sometimes.
 
My techno saavy friend wrote the instructions for emailing apic from the phone and it was sent,but.... the pic is now floating somewhere in cyberspace. I never received it, oh well.

Back to the real subject, I agree with the reproductive tract theory (although the bigfoot one was a good one as we've had horses with strange injuries, but horses can get hurt on "air" I've found).
Hard to tell if one of the girls is not laying, I have 8 and they are old.

I have new chicks coming. It's been a while since I've had babies and I've forgotten " How long til they start to lay eggs?"
