A little freaked out about this WARNING...

Devil chickens! Never heard of 'em... not ever - well I did have a rooster that was pretty cheeky, but he played fair pool - when he was particularly full of it, he'd hit your calf. It isn't in their DNA to go for eyes... they're not Velociraptors or Phoenixes from Harry Potter... they're hens! Sorry these folks made you worry... perhaps their loose screws have something to do with why they're not keeping the hens. Kinda gave me a chuckle though. (That said, youngsters will look at your teeth, earrings, rings, eyes... anything shiny, and investigate - but never Chucky Chickens...)

I'm certainly no chicken expert, but my personal experience has been this: birds are individuals. If they are raised from chicks and fairly friendly, you probably have nothing to worry about. I did have a couple who were very aggressive, right from the start. They never went for my eyes, but would attack my hands whenever I tried to feed and water. If you have an aggressive bird, you will know pretty quickly. It sounds like your flock is gentle, though.

There was a thread here not long ago about a chicken pecking at the holder's eye. Not something they necessarily go for, but I do think we have to remember that they peck to investigate, much as a human child puts things in its mouth to investigate. Some of my 11 week olds jump on my lap, but I am still protective of my eyes with them, and usually wear glasses.

They don't want to peck my eyes out. They just want to investigate their world.

I've never had my chickens peck at my eyes, but I don't think I really have ever gotten down on their level and just sat there for a long period of time either. They have never flown up at me to peck either. They do love painted toenails and little toddler fingers poking through the chicken wire, so be careful with the little ones--you don't want to scare them from loving the chicks.

If I'm not mistaken, Rooster Red got pecked in the eye by one of his chickens. He posted a picture of himself with the eyepatch to prove it.

I wouldn't advocate putting your eyes in pecking distance of a chicken.

I really think I'm with bluey---just don't put yourself in that position. If one attacks and flys at you trying to peck your eyes out I would suggest Chicken and rice!!! I can't even imagine how bad that would hurt!!!!!!

yep, i remember because i got pecked in the eye a few days later.
it hurts like all get out.

got a lovely scratched cornea and almost had to have surgery!

for people who think it's 'cute' for your chickens to roost on your shoulders, think twice. firstly, that gives them the top position in the peck order and they also just have easy access to your face.

the eye doctor told me that they see more scratched corneas from chicken pecks than any other source!

I had a barred rock, and she would always peck my feet when I went outside to feed them! She was such a brat. But the love of my life. She wasn't trying to be mean, she just had a really fun personality. Yes, they do peck eyes, but out of curiosity, I think. Like everyone else stated, they peck at just about anything. Be careful, thats all.
