A little freaked out about this WARNING...

Every pet should come with a warning label. They're all animals and they don't think like you and I. Seriously, don't be worried. They won't gouge your eyes out or pin you down and slurp your intestines. Like any animal, just learn how to properly handle them.

The only time I think that could happen is if you have a staring competition with one your chickens and stare them straight in the eyes and move them back and forth like a worm LOL

I was laying on the floor with my eyes closed while I had my 2 wk old ducklings and chick running around and when i opened my eyes one of the ducklings was staring at my face and pecked me in the eye! You need to be careful!!!

Just be carefull - last year one of my SLW chicks put a hole in my cornea (I think I spelled that correct?) She was about 6 weeks old and I was laying on the ground with them and she must have caught the glimmer in my eye and pecked it as hard as she could - Not funny at the time but the look on the dr and nurses faces when I had to explain what happend was priceless!
It gives new meaning to the Hokey Pokey:eek:

I would really advise you not to give them a chance to peck your eyes, lol.
We've had it happen a couple of times-
not pleasant!

I keep chickens far from my face for this reason.

I've had people ask me how I can stand to eat my chickens. I tell them that if I had a heart attack and died in the pasture, my husband would come home to nothing but bones and very fat chickens.

So, the camp is split. Almost in thirds.

I'm not gonna be on the floor with them or put them anywhere NEAR my face! I will use caution...most likely just keep a pair of clear safety goggles hanging by the coop/run. No biggie. Losing eyesight, very big biggie!

- Yes! It happened to me or a loved one/dog = 11 votes

Hi,

It has never happened to me, but I’m careful. I realize that chickens go after anything shiny so I have always made sure my eyes are a safe distance from them. I’m sure it’s not malicious but it’s how they investigate the world, by pecking.

More than once, my chickens have tugged at my ankle bracelet because of the shiny beads. I also have a tattoo on my ankle but they haven't been attracted to that yet. I have never had one that flew up on me to get something shiny.

I think just using a little common sense is the best and you will be fine. Hope this helps!
