A little freaked out about this WARNING...

From what i have seen, chickens use their beak like a hand. I guess its like a kid who puts any and everything in their mouth. mine love to peck at the spots on my legs.

This is just amazing! I've never thought of them pecking eyes. I guess I'm never at their level to do that. The chicks peck my rings, and I've had the hens peck my shoes. I've never had tem come close to my face.

rings have been mentioned...

but they also like red toe nail polish, and jibbets in crocks, and tattoos on legs.. (mayne its cause I have a lady bug on my leg

YEP! A chicken being a chicken! HEE HEE.. My Granddaughter, Abby,(10), sits out in the coop and plays with the girls almost daily.. I ask her if she has had that problem. She said, "You got to watch them, they are sneaky! Yes, they will try to peck your eyes!!" She has tried it with her glasses off and on.. Weird girl..she'd rather play with the chickens than ride her horse..

We have photos of her sitting in the coop doing her home work, with hens sitting on her shoulders!

I always go in the coop with my AK 47 and a 9mm on my side. You never know if one of the hens or my rooster even look at my eyes I fill-em full of lead.....so far I have shot none too bad was wanting something to go with my dumplings

Yep, BTDT with the eye peck thing.

Not their fault, they're just curious and will peck at anything that grabs their attention. MY fault for not being more attentive. Chickens on the shoulder -- cute, but you've gotta be careful!

I had one of my girls try to peck my eye when she was just a wee thing. (She missed, but pecked my face.) They just like shiny objects, and eyes in sunlight are, well, pretty and shiny. I snuggle them just the same. She is the only one, and I never had it happen again. Of course, if she gets that look....

Tippi understands...

I am not Dr. Doolittle, or a peg-legged pirate in a Robert Louis Stevenson swashbuckler (parrot on the shoulder), or the Empress of the now defunct Cochin China tossing bird seed into my hair before morning prayers.

Might of worked for those characters, but I'll rely on my old jungle fatigue hat (wide brim), pullets fly up, check it out, maybe (if so inclined) drop a load on the giant toad, but I'll still have my eyes, if not my dignity, once the flock moves on to attack the Grey Tree Frogs...

My other non-negotiable chook rule I follow: NEVER let the roo out with children. Our guy is easy going for a roo, but all it took was a new pair of mud boots (yellow stripe around soles) to set him off and it took two weeks before he adjusted to being shoved around with the new pair. They are unpredictable (ours naps between us on the back deck steps, but he's a roo and he will remind us of that fact - wouldn't keep him if he didn't).

Got to go find a phone booth...
