shoot them in the head with the 22. they wont go anywear after a shot to the head. A 22 will Stop them Dead right in there tracks with the head shot..Same for fox, yote..even deer...Ive shot all with a simple 22lr and it will kill anything if you hit it in the head and leave it dead right in its tracks....

Now, yes when you hit most in the vitals they may run awhile but it will be over soon enough. I use an old lever action marlin with a small scope on it and it has a clip for 7 shots or so...Love going after tree rats with it to..You can buy a case of shells and shoot and practice for hours..Me and my young daught love to do that on a weekend afternoon..

This thread has generated some questions in my mind. I was just about to post a question about how loud a 22 is and could I get away with shooting a raccoon in my suburban backyard (assuming I was very careful about what was behind and beyond my target). Now I worry that even if I could procure such a firearm, and even if I could hit a raccoon with it, would the injured raccoon make it to a neighbor's yard to die, and would they call the authorities, and would there be an investigation as to who was shooting animals in the neighborhood. Sorry, this turned into a ramble. I don't think I should try to get a 22.

Then try traps.... box or leg hold...... yes if your nabors are close they will hear the shot from a 22..even if you use a short shot they will still here it. But if you shoot the varmen in the head it wont make it anywhere..you need to practice to make sure every shot counts...

I would strongly advise the Russian 7.62x54r bolt action M44. Along with some surplus ammo. They retail cheap, and have a fixed bayonet for when you come in close. Perfect truck gun, get it wet? Who cares. Drop it? Who cares, works flawlessly.

This company sells them, but you can have on delivered to a local shop and transfer done if you cannot order one yourself. I have several, along with Mausers. I could not think of a better rifle! Like the bird said when it flew over Kmart....Cheap-Cheap!

Since these bullets can travel up to a mile on a miss, make sure you have a backstop behind your target, before you do any shooting. I think the neighbors would call the police more on the fear of a stray bullet than on a dying raccoon.

People in the suburbs don't like to hear gunfire. Although a .22 sounds like a big firecracker, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what it was and where it was coming from.

If your local ordinances don't permit the discharge of a weapon, I would advise against the .22 and suggest a havahart trap.

Thanks Bluey! How did you get your name? We had a feral rooster that my daughter named Bluie. I will look into the traps. I have read that after trapping, the best way to dispatch the 'coon is drowning in a really big container of water. Any other ideas (that aren't too messy)?

That is only true if the predator is levitating in the air about 2' over your head.

Seriously folks, this is not trench warfare.
If you are afraid that you might miss then use 12 guage 00 buck from about 10' out, and load the gun up with 3 or 4 shells.

If you are confident enough in your aim then you can kill a critter with anything; a 70's era lawn dart would do just fine.

If it happened in my backyard then I would feel bad about the fact that I failed to provide a proper environment for my charges to dwell in.

I wouldn't shoot anything that wasn't a threat unless I planned to eat it.
