I was checking my girls one night, and me and my old man were walking out there. He stepped right over a copperhead, while I, being the one carrying the light, nearly had a heart attack, because I didn't want the old man to freak out and have a heart attack because of my screaming... sooo I waited until he was already past the snake, and said....

"Hey dad, you stepped over a copperhead..."

Dad- "You let me?"

"I didn't want to scare you and kill you at the same time"

Dad- "Dumba**"

What you going to do when one is inside the nest box? LOL Sorry, couldn't resist asking. My dad and brother would most often gather the egss and would sometimes reach under a broody hen to get the eggs and find a snake curled up under her. They hated when that happened. Expecting to find an egg, but grabbing or feeling a snake instead. That was the reason mom would not go collect eggs if any of the hens went broody.

there would be a snake under the hen??? OMG.. was it eating her eggs? did it hurt your hen and why in the world would she allow it under her?

kind of freaked out about this one.

OMG, THAT is the stuff nightmares are made of, ewwww!!!!
Glad you weren't hurt at all (physically anyway!).

Finding a snake in my coop is my biggest fear. I am deathly afraid of them. I almost stepped on a rattle snake a few years back. I was carrying a basket of clothes to hang up and didn't see him start to slither across my side walk. When I did look down to see the step, he was just inches from my foot. Needless to say the basket and the clothes went flying in the air, I ran at a speed I hadn't run at since I was about 12, went in my house and leaped onto the kitchen counter in one jump. My mom was visiting and her and my daughters were out of the deck and had no idea what was wrong with me. So I tried to call them all inside and I finally caught my breath enough to tell them there was a rattle snake right under the deck.

If a snake ever touches me, venomous or not, I will die on the spot of a heart attack from fright. If there is one in my coop, I will either call my husband or one of the guys from my work or my neighbor or all of them! Of course my screaming would probably have people running down the street to see what my problem is. This is my biggest fear as a chicken owner. So far in 10 years I have not lost a chicken to one nor have I seen one in the coop and I hope I never do If they go in there, they leave before I see them. I am always very careful to look in nest boxes before sticking my hand in them.

I hope you are ok. Just the thought of a snake touching my foot gives me the heebie jeebies! You are braver than I am.

Oh crud. Crud crud crud crud crud CRUD. I am so freaked by that thought.

I do not mind snakes if I SEE 'em first. It is the startlement factor that gets me. But once I get my neck hairs up, I cannot stop the mad, dashing dance of Get Away! Get Away! that takes over my body. And now I am having second thoughts about reaching under broody hens - of which I have FOUR right now. GAH!!!

See...the moment I hit the submit button I knew someone was going to bust this newbie for that one!!! LOL I will probably at the very least urinate down my leg, most likely faint too!!!

I'm not afraid of them if I see them before they make contact with me, it's just the "startle" factor that skivvies me out. Since we moved here and have been clearing so much land off, we have come in to close contact with some rattlers but a least they were kind enough to give us a warning and then, well I hope I don't offend anyone since I'm new here and all but, they are now dead. A garden hoe is a country girl's best friend in my book!!

LOL, garden hoe too close to the poisonous snakes for me. Shotgun for this country girl.

yes, there were sometimes a snake under the setting hen. Don't know if it was able to slide in under them to where they didn't notice or if the hens were so broody and intent on setting, that they would not move off. Yup, the snakes would swallow the eggs. None of the hens were ever hurt by the snakes. They were always non-poisonous. Simple black snake (also known as rat snake), bull snake, or king snake.

BTW: did you know king snakes will eat other snakes. Even poisonous ones.

Oh my gosh! Like many of you, I am deathly afraid of snakes and have had some close run-ins but never been bitten! OP, I'm glad you're ok.

I can't quite get over that a snake was under a chicken!
