A Stupid Egg Suckin' Dog Issue - If it wasn't my daughters dog........

Most dry dog food is nothing but garbage. Unless you are giving the dog something like Innova EVO or Core Wellness, you are most likely feeding the dog corn. Eggs are very nutritious. The dog is just smart. A pain, but smart.

Tie her up or get a lid for your basket and stop feeding the poor thing nutritionally deficient food.

A good SHOCK COLLAR would solve the problem PDQ! When he misbehaves or grabs an egg, POWWWWWYYYY!, ZAP!!!! If the dog must be living at your home, it has to understand what YOU want, NOT what IT wants! I value my dogs highly but they know I LEAD, they follow. NO, that dog is NOT a certified nutritionist! Just a certified EGG-SUCKER. Shock collar works for TWO legged egg-suckers too!

All my other dogs know what "no" means and how to sit, stay, down... i can walk them on a leash with only 1 finger! all my dogs know how to mind and do tricks and stuff like that but this dog breaks all the rules! she is so darn bouncy! My daughter named her Pixie but she don't even come to her name half the time! all she does is run, bounce & play... But my husband keeps saying to just give her time and once she gets to be a year or so old she will calm down and start learning. I know she is smart... but she chooses not to act like it! we did teach her not to chase the car anymore though! my husband used it to chase her all the way back down the road and back to the house! she has never done that again! that was like 3 or 4 months ago.

That is a really good command for dogs to know. My mom's dog knows that one, and he LOVES sneaking anything paper and ripping it to shreds. If you see him with a paper plate in his mouth and say, "Leave it!" he drops it automatically.

I do this too and it works well.

The dog gets ENOUGH nutrition...... But, thanks for your advice! Maybe I should go buy the darn thing steak & egg dinners every night!......

I may have too.... I talked to my husband about that........ he says, yes, that will stop her but... I dont want her to not do it because she cant do it but because she shouldnt do it and we said "NO".... that make since to anyone?

I can understand the frustration. Of course tying her up is an easy solution but you really want her to listen to you. I have the same problem with my dog(not egg eating, but other things) he is smart, but disobedient. Of course, this is partly our fault, but he knows the commands just chooses not to do them. Make sure everyone in the house is involved in the training, my dog respects me, but not my mom, and I'm not at home (college student) enough to really work with him unfortunately. I would try what someone suggested with walking her on a leash and anytime she looks at the eggs or pulls toward them a firm no, and then call her back to you and reward her with a treat or petting when she looks at you and comes back to your side. Eventually (hopefully) she will understand that when she is out with you, she looks to you for rewards, doesn't try to do it herself with the eggs. It will be a lot of work, but if you stick with it she should get it and she definitely sounds like a keeper if she is so good with the chickens...oh and btw...my dog is 4 and we still struggle. He has calmed down a little, but he's still stubborn...

Dunno. My two love eggs as well. They are fenced and can't get to the coops or they would likely "help" with the egg gathering too. Perhaps when working with her, you could use eggs as a reward for good behaviour. My two do understand the "Wait" command as well as "back up" command. Perhaps if the dog sits and waits for you to finish collecting, then she can have the dirty or poopy eggs.
Really though, I have no idea. Staking her or crating her to keep her out of your way would work. That jumping up and biting your pants is bad news. You could get hurt!
Good luck!

Bitter apple may work for snatching eggs, but I don't see it as a long-term solution. Dogs have really sensitive noses. Unless you plan on spraying every egg every time they'll figure out which are good and which are bad.

I agree with everyone else. You have to teach her to respect your space and obey. "Drop" is a _really_ useful command to teach a dog, and if making you happy is more interesting than tasty eggs then she'll be more than thrilled to listen. "No" (obviously

the sit-stay combo (make her sit when you have to open the gate, then once _you_ go through, then she can get up and follow. Dogs never, ever, ever, ever, ever, go before you. They never enter a house before you, they never walk on a leash ahead of you, they never go through a door before you. Period.).

Have you tried keeping her on a leash while you carry eggs? Go through all of the motions of opening the gate with the leash in hand. If she disobeys a command you just gave her (such as sit) then immediately reprimand her. She'll figure out that you're paying attention even if you aren't looking.

Also, don't be afraid to be aggressive and make a big deal out of it the first time she intentionally disobeys. Dogs have a chain of command. When one dog gets out of the the alpha doesn't politely invite him over for tea and discuss whose feelings may have been hurt. Dogs get straight to the point, shake someone around and then go back to their business.

Then again, if you have 11 dogs I'm probably not telling you anything new. Hopefully she mellows out and starts listening
