A Stupid Egg Suckin' Dog Issue - If it wasn't my daughters dog........

I just thought of this. Have you tried teaching her a "find the egg" game? There are ways to teach your dog to sniff out eggs and bring them to you. If she associated "bring egg" with "I'm the most awesome dog in the world" she may be less inclined to gobble them down. Especially if she's rewarded with praise and tasty treats.

Here's a link to the article:

You don't have to feed the dog steak and eggs to not feed them garbage. 99% of the dog food out there is not only lacking nutrition, it causes health problems as your pet ages. Cancer, cysts, urinary issues, liver damage, etc...

But hey, it's your dog. Do whatever you want.

I hear what you are saying, but it is JUST a dog. They are not kids.

I have a black lab that will get in the chicken door and steal eggs out of the nesting boxes. I made the door smaller, she still got in. I locked the door for there pen she climbed the chain link fence. I had the best luck with a shock collar turned all the way up. I would watch her out the kitchen window and the minute she would try to sneak in I would zap her and yell out the window NO.

Now this has not solved it all together but has cut down loads of missing eggs. I hope you can get her broke of that nast little habbit.

It sounds like a VERY frustrating behavior on the dog's part, but from an outsiders perspective, I have to say your dog is smart and funny.

It sounds to me (based on all your posts in this thread) like you are a good dog owner with generally well behaved dogs who know basic obedience. If it were me and there are not any other signs of a dominance problem, and you haven't said there are, I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch about dominance issues and would prefer not to spend lots of time and trouble to train extra behaviors or curb the current behavior. Common sense with a hint of laziness would dictate that I do just what you said and get a picnic basket w/lid for egg collecting.

Egg sucking-- who'd have dreamed of THAT!

That dog is a crack up-- you'd make my day if you'd post a photo of her.

either chain her or train her. Those are your choices. Make her work. It sounds like she is bored and this is one fun game. Have her open and close the gate for you and have her carry the basket. She will be having fun and burning energy at the same time. You have to many dogs not to have them earn there food. My dogs have to earn there food in some way or other. Cost to much to keep them otherwise. You can pm me for training tips.

Do you have any pictures of her? My husband raises Black Mouth Curs and we'd love to see her

They are something else to train. They can be so well behaved and so rotten all in one day! Lots of exercise and mental stimulation seems to be the key to keeping them under control, although it's hard to tire them out!

While I hld little regard for a lot thats posted on Wickpidia, thiis article on the Cur Dog is fairly accurate.

Keep in mind Cur's were bred mainly for hunting, and not small animals, they are/ were bred for rounding up wild pig, bear, cougars etc.
This is a breed of dog that needs a job.
egg sucking comes natural to them as does theiving. while not an endearing trait, its normal.
I agree with the shock collar apporach but keep in mind these dogs have high tolerence to pain , I dont think its going to be all that effective.

I agree with the previous post of the shock collar....just for the entertainment value of it!

ZAP!!! They usually get a puzzled look on their faces like, "God?!, is that you?"

I have an egg eater also, but making the hole smaller worked for an unattended pop door....he will still creep in and make a mad dash for the nests if they coop door is left open!

This is a dog that stole all the best tomatoes out of the garden, eats apples by the bushels full each fall, digs up my potatoes and piles them neatly under a tree, eats the chicken's feed if he can get it..even shelled corn. He is a thief extraordinaire! Its very frustrating at times, but you have to admire the intelligence involved that made him finally learn that a hen cackling about an egg = a dinner bell!

Must be all that cheap ol' feed I'm feeding him.

The other dog eats the same stuff and seems quite content to be malnourished!

I agree with the thought that this pup, although intelligent and enterprising he may be, needs some one on one time with the alpha leader-YOU! No other dogs around, just basic come, sit, stay, drop it commands at first. THEN, pull out the egg bucket and see how the training went. You can't make a dog hate the taste of eggs...they are so darn good....but you can make him learn to respect your property when you are standing right next to it!

My dog wouldn't dream of stealing anything when I'm out in the yard.....he's too slick for that! We only catch him when we see him from a window!
