A Tour of the Coops and Critters of Cat Country (Image Heavy!)

Roosevelt disappeared one day; we never saw a feather or anything to suggest that he might have been taken by a predator. Victor and I believe that someone stole him from the Farm. I'm still keeping an eye out for him. I miss him very much. I resisted putting any other chickens into his pen here on the Hill until about two weeks ago; appropriately, it's a rooster I've named Red and his hens, two of whom are Roosevelt's daughters. I still call it "Roosevelt's Pen" and I probably always will.

Roosevelt was last year's birthday present, and still the best present I've ever received. Tomorrow (Sept 1) is my birthday and I'm really missing him.

Cattitude I am so very sorry. I wish there was a way I just rehomed 2 of his brothers and have a third here. But, Cynthia just hatched a beautiful Orp boy from Suede and Dusty no less, his name is Atlas. You are welcome to have him if you would like. Just let Cyn know, he is still at her place with the other 3 babies I will be picking up in a few weeks but if you would like a Son of Suede, Atlas is yours.

I am so sorry, I truly am.

There is a video of Atlas here as well as pics of the four babies.....but Atlas crowed at 4 days old.

A chance to have another Son of Suede! No way will I pass it up! The building project starts *tomorrow*.

I live near Murray, KY, and would be more than willing to meet you near the end of your trip. *happy dance* Here I was, brooding because my birthday wouldn't be right without that big ole Roosevelt. And now his brother may be making his way toward my doorstep. Divine Providence is a wonderful thing.

Cyn, would you be willing to entrust Atlas to my care? He would stay on the Hill with me, not down at the Farm. I'm already planning to evict Red and his girls so that I can install Atlas in his brother's home. I'll send a PM as well, so that the three of us can get together on the when/where/how.

What a magnificent offer, at just the right time!! Bless you both!!

Sweetie, you are welcome to Atlas if Ladyhawk so decrees. He is hers to do with as she wishes. I know how much you loved big old Roosevelt and Atlas being his half brother might be some comfort for you.

A.T. Hagan :

Your coop photos have given me some ideas for the new ones I'm going to build for my kid's show birds. Thanks!

Thank you! The solid roof sections lift up as well, so that you can get to your babies from almost any place they could be in the coop. The floor is 1/2 inch hardware cloth, and I've cut some planks that can be laid over the floor beneath the roof in winter, so that there is no draft where the chickens will be sleeping. I used 2x2s inside as a perch. Hope these details help!

Cattitude, it is a done deal. Atlas will be yours on my way back from Cyn's I shall meet up with you somewhere along I-75 in Kentucky. He is young, do you have any younger ones for to hang with? If not, I may be able to get a young bantam silkie, d'uccle or serama from my group to go with him so he is not alone. But we will work it out. I know you took good care of Roosevelt and have no problem letting Atlas live with you. Everyone needs a Son of Suede in my book.

Your flock is beautiful! But I'm worried about chickenwire being the only thing protecting them from racoons and dogs. Racoons and dogs can rip through chickenwire like it was butter. Can you put hardware cloth over the chickenwire - I'd hate for you to someday be posting about how your beautiful flock is destroyed by predators.
