Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggggg!!!!

Siz. Could you possibly borrow a paintball gun from one of the neighborhood kids. Shoot the dog with that and it may sting enough to deter him from coming back. Nonetheless it will mark the dog for animal control. Then should your neighbor question you as to why you did that explain that it killed one of your PET chickens and the next time you will use a real gun. Even though you have no intention of actually shooting it just the threat may be enough to prevent them from letting it run loose.
Just thinking out loud here. Sorry for your loss.

They said they would pay for the dead chicken but they dont seem to get what it takes to raise a bird to 6mo.They acted like "its only a chicken"

Have you spoken with the dog owners? Perhaps they are animal lovers in general and would feel obligated to keep their dog put up as well as repay you for your loss as best they can. I know money would not help the heartbreak but they still owe you something!!

Kind Regards and I hope those people pay their debt to you!

I SO love the paint ball idea!! Make it PINK paint - do they have that? Can you see the guy when he sees his big Great Dane all pinked out?

PLUS - makes a great warning shot across the bow.

Great idea!

It is so infuriating when people are irresponsible with their dogs. Unfortunately you must keep your birds under wraps until this is under control or there will be more deaths. Death by dog is a horrific way to die and your other birds are likely stressed - put a drop or two of Rescue Remedy in their water each of the next few days.

There are a lot of good ideas in many BYC threads. horsejody has been through this big time and has done a great job - check out her posts. I have been through it (though thankfully no deaths) and am in the midst of legal action; despite this the dog has been back and I just had the guy ticketed again (slow learner).

Do get photos the next time you see the dog (your birds will be locked up which should free you up to take lots of pics). Do advise the dog owners IN WRITING of what has happened and that their dog must never be in your yard again. Do prepare bills that you will submit to them (for your poor bird and everything you've spent on its care - there are BYC threads that can help you with this). As others have suggested, do find out your state laws and local ordinances (sometimes in the health code) pertaining to dogs and cite them in your letter.
