Abandoned Chicks at the Post Office

Its in the daily operating regs. Do you want me to link those too?
Not necessary for me. Many years of reading gov’t regs, I figured any definition would be in a different section. But the word “disposal” is so vague, I honestly would have been surprised had they /not/ defined it.

It’s just dicey, imo, to have the definition so far removed from the usage. Leaves too much opportunity for slip-ups.

I had similar experience in private industry - but yes, anytime a bunch of unqualified idiots write legislation, and leave the writing of the regulations implimenting the legislation to others, much "mischief" may be had.

/full disclosure I've helped those idiots write legislation - in more than a dozen states (sometimes more than once), and two foreign countries.

It really makes me question if their expose videos are legit. Was it one of their plants doing the abuse?
Welp, my last response was deleted for having an external link that violates BYC rules. I'm unclear on what the violation was exactly, but whatever.

ANYWAY, I'm pretty passionate about the danger that PETA poses to animals and pet owners, I'll rephrase: There are probably some expose videos that are legit, but PETA's alternative of killing those animals or setting them loose in unsafe circumstances are just as awful, but it gets rationalized with the belief that a dead animal is better than an enslaved animal. A brief Google search of "PETA" and "misogyny" also leads one to a whole host of pretty gross -isms that PETA is guilty of using in their campaigns that already are steeped in guilt and emotionalism designed to get people to give them money without thinking too hard about the end game of the organization.

The post master ? . I’m sure they have no interest in throwing away their job or risking jail/fines for a box, even if it contains live animals.
Once those chicks start to die, the postmaster will almost certainly lose their job!
When authorities step in, the USPS will not want a "black eye"- they have enough problems! The postmaster WILL be fired!

That's cute. Ignorant, but cute.

Tens of thousands of chicks die in the mail every year. Roughly 1-2% of the Millions of chicks shipped thru the mail each year. Has been the case since the USPS started delivering live animals over a century ago.

I've not seen a wave of postmasters being escorted out in response...

Welcome to BYC, btw. There's a place for opinions, but we like to start with the facts, then offer our opinions on how to apply those facts to our situations.

Just a tip/some info for the future, PETA should never be called in for anything. They take animals and euthanize them because they believe animals shouldn't be pets.

They even stole a dog from a family and put it down within an hour of having it and didn't allow them to get the body.

(To the OP, I am so happy to hear the chicks made it home! God bless those chicks!)
And to this post, that is CRAZY! I have never heard of PETA, so I wouldn't have known anything about it.

(We had a Dark-eyed junco who we rescued a couple of years ago, passed away today, broke my sister's heart. Anyway, he crashed into one of our chicken's houses, we took him in and put him in an old cockatiel cage. He probably had a broken wing, but he healed up just fine, even though he lost the ability to fly. He was as healthy and happy as any domestic caged bird. ) (Looking back, had we given him to the rescue, they probably would have put him down. But we hadn't, and it gave him a couple of extra years to live.) (The family will miss him.)

when my order was lost I tracked it down and at 5AM I managed to get ahold of someone working in that city. I asked her if she would open the box and give them water which she did. I think that may be all you can do. Find the right person thats willing to go against the rules a little. Ask them to add an apple sliced up or something along those lines and that might give them enough to make it back to sender.
I’m a postal worker and I’d do that. Who’s gonna get the clerk in trouble? Certainly not the chicken owners. But it’s true, it’s mail and we can’t just give it away or take it home ourselves. That’s a fireable offense. But I literally had a customer the other day say “can’t I just come and get them tomorrow?” “Um no ma’am. They are cold, they haven’t eaten and they are screaming 😂” 7 hours later someone came for them.

Why. Just why. Those poor babies! I am purposely putting in next years order later than I want (first week school let’s out) because I’m 100% sure I’ll be available to get them & keep an eye on them right away.
