Abandoned Chicks at the Post Office

Update: We went into the post office this morning to follow up. May or may not have brought supplies just in case there might be any momentum for Operation Deserted Chick Rescue 🤣. This time, the postmaster was working. Crazy story, but as it turns out, one of the letter carriers who has chickens of his own drove out to the address after closing and was told by whoever answered the door after 3 rounds of banging on it that they didn't order any chicks. No one knew it, but this person wasn't the one who ordered the chicks and was only staying at the house temporarily. Somehow word got back to the person who DID order the chicks, who showed up to the post office panicked within 10 minutes to claim them. According to her, she had a spam blocker on her phone that blocked "government" calls, so somehow the voicemails never got to her. A little confusing because most people track the chicks they order and show up either within minutes of the phone call or before the post office even opens it's doors. And interestingly, the postmaster had no intention of returning them to the hatchery and was willing to hand them off (to either us or the letter carrier) before it was too late, which makes me grateful for the reasonability of the guy. Glad it ended better than I anticipated. Thanks for the different perspectives!

(end of the quote after I screwed up the tags)

Definitely a weird scenario.

Yay, for having a good post master (and a small community, too, I’ll wager). Glad the littles got where they were going. If this is the roughest spot in their lives, they’ll be okay.

That is just horrible!
I know that I've read posts where people have been given unclaimed chicks.
I would call PETA, animal control, and my congressman. I don't know how the postmaster could be so ridiculously inept. Morals should trump laws, and common sense should always prevale.
Just a tip/some info for the future, PETA should never be called in for anything. They take animals and euthanize them because they believe animals shouldn't be pets.

They even stole a dog from a family and put it down within an hour of having it and didn't allow them to get the body.

100% and not unless you held a gun to my head. PETA is horrible, and I would bet serious money that at least half of the folks who give them donations haven't dug deep enough to understand the true philosophy behind the group, which sees pet ownership as a form of slavery and exploitation. There is an enormous difference between animal welfare and animal rights, and Ingrid Newkirk and Peter Singer were all about the latter. "A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy" is the rationale that the group uses to put rescued animals down, set them free in unsafe circumstances, and poison them. I used to train and show dogs as a kid, and these idiots who put antifreeze in dogs' water were always the reason that we had to have a friend watch our kennels if we needed to use the bathroom. There is nothing good about the organization.

I feel a rant coming on, so I'll stop with that. 🙄

So... 18 USC Section 1708 et seq.

Its a Felony with potential sentence fo 5 years and $1/4M. Also loss of pension, AND a crime of "Moral Turpitude", meaning once convicted, you have no chance of being a Notary, handling money as a bank teller, working in a whole host of even call center jobs, its an impediment to profesisonal licensing, and may affect (depending on Jurisdiction) one's ability to obtain a number of other licenses or even run for public office.

Not worth it.

People putting their Morals over the law makes us a Nation of men, not a Nation of laws - with all the corruption and abuse that carries with it. If the law is inept and or unjust (and yes, much of it is), be willing to do the time if you do the crime. That's Civil Disobediance. Otherwise, its simply criminal.

Shipping live animals thru the mail is regulated here. What to do with live animals after 72 hours, here. If you want it changed, there's a political process (albeit slow and uncertain) for that. The Mail Recovery Center is able to donate some things of nominal value - unclaimed live animals amd once live animals (assumedly, for health and safety reasons) are not among them.

Yep. My bf used to live about 10 miles from PETA's Virginia headquarters (Norfolk) when he lived in Virginia Beach, and he has shared PLENTY of PETA horror stories with me that made local news, but not national news.

It really is a bizarre organization run by a bunch of questionable characters from what he has said. There was even a story where PETA was caught euthanizing animals and putting the carcasses in dumpsters in NC. Here's one account of the story:

Here's another gem and FAR more revealing and disgusting than the one above, if you can believe that:

It really makes me question if their expose videos are legit. Was it one of their plants doing the abuse?

Most interesting is the lack of a definition for “disposal” - unless they define it in an earlier section of the Code. 🧐
Its in the daily operating regs. (look for 691.522)

The Postmaster is supposed to either hold a public sale, complete a bunch of paperwork, and send the proceeds (less commision) along, or attempt to pawn them off on a Humane Society or other Animal Shelter. What to do with dead animals is "elsewhere" - I leave it to you to search for it if interested.
