About to get some chicks....

I cant imagine them doing them vey well without a heat lamp. Maybe  inside after a few weeks of life...but not as day olds.  I would highly advise having a lamp.  First week of life needs to be around 95 degrees. In the coop with their mother, the mother would sit on them to keep them warm. The heat lamp takes the place of their mother.
Plan on them outgrowing that cage REALLY quick!  I put 6 in a cardboard box a little bigger than that they are about 2 weeks old, they already need something bigger. So I will be working on that tomorrow.
I agree they need that hest lamp.

I believe the OP is looking to stir things up. Check a thread begun by them titled "Confinement"

I'm setting up my brooder today!!! Yay!!

My chicks should ship Monday and we should get them Tues/Wed. We're SO excited! We've got 10 Black Australorps and 5 EE's coming in. Our first batch of chicks. We've got a flock of 2yr olds, so we want to maintain our flow of eggs!

Can't wait for our fluff balls!

I ran an old broomstick thru the clamp on the heat lamp, and have the broomstick resting on the top of the chairs. It is wedged in and tied, so it cannot fall. With 3 kids, 4 dogs, and a cat running around the house, I wanted to make sure the contraption cannot be knocked down. The chairs are freaking heavy - they weigh about 75 lbs each, so I don't worry too much about them being tippy.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I'm having mine in a playpen in our living room and was having so much trouble trying to figure out how to suspend the lamp because the clip is essentially useless and that is perfect

I had recently resorted to trying to figure out a ceiling mount that wouldn't encourage anyone trying to swing from it lol.

Just put my order in at the local Paris Farmers Union for 6 chicks. They'll be in the beginning of May. 2 Brown Leghorns and 4 Silver Laced Wyandottes. So excited!!

Our local feed had straight run and sex linked pullets. Just a heads up, if you have a NASCO outlet nearby, they have a nice selection of lamps. holders, etc. to keep your chicks healthy.

Got my new chicks last week. ordered from McMurray - Totally satisfied - All chicks arrived alive and they even put an extra in the box besides the free exotic chick they promised. So that was a surpirse. I am now the proud Momma of 7 dogs and 15 chicks - 5 Black Aussies, 4 White Rocks, 3 New Hampshires, 2 Buff Rocks, and 1 that I think is a Cochin of some sort. Most probably a roo, but myabe I will keep him anyway. I'm going to try and post his picture so you guys can tell me what kind you think he is. He def has feathered feet, is a rust color and has an attitude already. He doesn't run from me when I reach down to pick him up like the other chicks do! If it's a hen, she will be the boss lady. There are more chicks in this pic because I ordered 25 and split with someone else. This was the first day I got them. They are all eating GroGelPlus mixed with feed. Everybody is doing well today 4 days later. Can't see my little Cochin in the pic. I will get another soon.

Oh yeah forgot to tell you, my brooder is the box my chest freezer came in at Christmas time. I have been planning to get my chicks a long time. LOL.
