I'm so sorry for your loss. It just break's my heart when one of mine fall's victim to a predator. I would talk to my neighbor's when I was calm enough to do so and give them a chance to fix the problem. I would definately check the law's in your area. I live in a county that has no animal control or law's on animal's. Shooting the neighbor's dog may be your only choice if the neighbor's don't cooperate. I'm totally against killing anything but if something is killing my bird's it has to go. I have 17 dog's [all were throw away's] and as a dog owner I'm a firm beliver that you have to keep your dog's up and not allow them to bother your neighbor's. I keep mine in fenced in area's and I stay up until 4am on the day's my one neighbor that can hear my dog's bark get's up to go to work. Most night's my dog's are quite but if a deer or other creature's come close to my dog pen's they are going to bark. That's why I stay up to quite my dog's. This is probably why my neighbor has never complained about my 17 dog's. My old man has had to shoot several dog's through the year's because the owner's wouldn't take responsibility. I wasn't happy with this but I'm less happy to find one of my bird's dead or just find feather's. Everyone here has given good advise, you will just have to figure out the best solution for you situation. I'm so hoping the neighbor's will do the right thing and pen there dog's up. It's alway's hard for me being a bird & dog lover but I can't deal with my bird's being killed. I've got my finger's crossed that everything will come out alright. If the neighbor's don't fix the problem, than they would be considered in my book as bad neighbor's so I wouldn't worry about keeping the peace. Do what you have to do. Good luck with your problem. PEACE
Hello Everyone,
I am the newbie to this wonderfull site and am also
sorry for your loss.
I've only made it thru page 1 and saw their are 2
more.
I agree with most everything wrote on page 1 with
1 major exception.
Yes you can stop a chicken killing dog with a gun.
But given the opportunity you can also break a
dog espically your own.
Someone else has surely said this in the pages I
can't read now.
TIE THAT DEAD CHICKEN BY IT"S FEET AROUND
SAID DOGS NECK TILL IT ROTTS OFF!
Usually 2 to 3 days.
Said dog will never even look at a chicken agian.
Again I am sorry for everyones loss and sorry to
have to post this.
Sincerely ,The Dude
The state wanted to close it due to the fact that sometimes it listed Social Security numbers of criminals. Ok, so if they have good credit why would they steal? And why would you want to assume someone's identity that possibly has outstanding warrants? Even most of the people in lock-up are smarter than that!
I hope I didn't upset anyone. I really just get upset thinking of my chickies. I have lost so many. I have most of them pened up and am going to pen them all soon. And I am going to put electric wire around it all.
Hang in there. One thing you can do if you can't do free range, but want to (and the dog is your bigest worry) is get a couple rolls of cattle fencing and use that around a big area. That is what I did for my big chickens. They have a big pen made of this. It has no top(yet
) so hawks might be a problem. But I don't have to worry about dogs.
Sorry to hear of your loss. Probably everyone that freeranges and isn't out in the middle of nowhere will have a similar story.
We had a neighbor's pit bull come over and take out 14 birds while we were out of town and a neighbor was watching our animals. I followed a feather trail to their fenced yard (only 3' tall). Got my DH and had him talk to the young girl who owned the dog. He told her that we had the right to shoot it but that we would give it 3 chances and if we saw it again we would call her. That dog tried different approaches to try to get to our chickens but we caught it each time. Only took 2 days for the dog to use up its 3 chances. She found a new home for the dog.
Talking works if they are responsible people and you have some proof that it was their dogs - like a feather pile by their fence. If they don't lock up the dogs, the dogs will be back as it is great fun for them.
We use birdshot to chase off strays. One time is usually enough. Plus our dogs don't like strange dogs and will usually let us know about intruders by barking and looking out the window.
I just went thru this myself. I am sorry for your loss. The dog owner is responsible for the damages to your tractor and the replacement of your chickens.
I would definately talk to them and give them a price. A price that will more than cover your expenses.
I know it will not replace your babies but it should open his eyes and make him think about keeping his dogs up.
