Today was hard. I don't know if I want to get as close to the other ones as I did these.

I will update everyone tomorrow. I didn't sleep worth a flip last night, so now it has caught up with me.

I talked to the neighbors yesterday. It was a terrible way to meet someone for the first time, but over all it went really well considering. (the husband came to meet us when we were moving in, and we hadn't met the wife yet.) I explained that I didn't want to just shoot the dogs, I wanted to give them a chance to keep them penned up, but that if they came into our yard again we were going to have to take care of it. They were genuinely understanding, and the wife was really sad, but knew that we would have to do what we have to do. Unfortunately I found out that animal control won't do anything about it out here, and that we have to take care of things like this ourselves. The husband told me that he knows how it feels because his son used to show chickens with FFA and the neighbor next door to him had dogs that killed all of his show chickens. And the neighbor refused to do anything about it, so he called animal control and animal control told him to take care of it himself.

Anyway they had left for the weekend and had the dogs in a pen, and they had chewed through the pen and, that's how they were out. So the couple is making arrangements for someone to keep the dogs for a couple of weeks while they get adequate fencing/containment set up.

Thank you to everyone for the condolences and advice. With time it's getting a little better, I just can't stand to see where their brooder used to be.

And I refuse to look at the tractor. I think I will have my husband take it apart and build another one out of it. It needs it anyway after how bad the dogs tore it up.

It sounds like you have good neighbors. I hope everything gets mended quickly - the fence, your coop & run, and your heart.

They can't afford to pay for it; they didn't offer and I didn't ask. He walks with a cane b/c he was in a bad car wreck about a year ago, and hasn't been awarded disability yet. They had to sell their horses b/c they couldn't take care of them. She works doubles at the hospital and they have 6 kids between the two of them. I just can't bring myself to ask them to pay for them. Now if the dogs kill any more chickens, that may be a different story...

I am so sorry for your loss.

I can't stand it when people won't keep their dogs home!!

It sounds like your neighbors are good folks.

It'll get easier - these little fuzzy butts have a way of winning you over even when you don't think they can.
