I am fairly new to chicken keeping. I started out with 6 white leghorns. I recently added a red sex link that a friend gave to me. I am thinking of adding 2 barred rocks to my flock. How well do barred rocks do with white leghorns & sexlinks? I don't want my flock to get bullied. My flock is 17-20 weeks old the 2 barred rocks that i am adding are 15 weeks old. I've read barred rocks can be bullies but they are my favorite looking chicken. So I really want a couple in my flock.

Mine isn't a bully at all - I also have leghorns and sexlinks. She is nice and sweet and started laying at 18 1/2 weeks. She is my friendliest chicken of the new 6 I got. She stands up for herself, but isn't exceptionally mean. Just right. :) Hope all goes well with yours!

My Barreds are not mean at all. They are very curious. They are the ones that will come up and peck my pant legs and boot tops and look up at me to get me to give them treats. Annoying sometimes, because if I am squatting down with the waterers..well. I give them a tug on their tail, they shuffle feathers, and then look up again to do it all again. Overall rather endearing.

They get along just fine with my Sexlinks and my Leghorn mix.

It will be more the singular temperament of the bird rather than those breeds as none of those breeds are known for aggression. Any bird can be just a nasty little brute. If I can't discourage them, then I call those dinner.

My BR is at the bottom of the pecking order at my place. That could change in time I guess, I've only had her two weeks, but she doesn't cause any problems. She is a very sweet, quiet bird who tries to avoid confrontation.

We are brand new to this, but of our 6 chicks (all almost 2 weeks old) our barred rock is by far the nicest and most outgoing of them all. She is so smart and LOVES to be with us, on us etc.

Thanks for all your comments, this puts my mind at ease. I love the look of barred rocks I think they're beautiful!

My barred rocks are the backbone of my flock, and they do fine with my sex links, leghorns, Sussex, wyandottes, reds, Easter eggers and Welsummers.

As Lady said, it's more an individual bird's temperament, you get mean girls sometimes. But as a rule, they're easygoing ladies.

I have 2 barred rocks, 2 production reds (lucy and Penny) and 1 white rock mutt (Angel) My barreds (yen and yang) are a tiny bit bossy to my mutt because she has no like kind. She is white with some black spots, and she is tiny compared to my other girls. They don't hurt her, just peck her then food is served in the morning. She learned to wait til it clears out then go eat. With a 13 lbs feeder there is plenty. The barreds are a more intelligent bird and like people. Mine are lap chicks. They literally hop up in ur lap to be pet and carried around. But they also climb up on things so ill come out of the house, too. Too smart for their own good little stinkers!
