I would recommend Buckeyes. They thrive in cold weather. Good layers most of the time and great dual purpose. Very friendly, probably the friendliest breed I have.
I really love the look of the Silver Laced Wyandotte, they are very stunning birds. Katy on here has some beautiful SLW. They lay a light brown egg. My SLW is from a hatchery but she is very nice and is the first one to come running up to you.
The Welsummers lay a very dark egg, I don't have them so I can't tell you much about them.
Still too many breeds to choose from, aaaaaaaaaaaa!
Anyone have white sussex hens? Are they good in cold weather? I heard they're good layers and quite docile and friendly...
I really also want some ameraucanas for the colored eggs - do they ALL have the blue or green egg gene or can you get stuck with some that lay brown eggs?
Yep, am seeing both black marans and ameraucanas to add egg color variety since I am selling more and more eggs, I can ask for a bit more $ as they will be "specialty" eggs! Plus I just love the rainbows... ah!
First pull the ones with the little snowflakes (winter layers, winter hardy), then pull the names out of those that have the # of eggs that seems right for you, then narrow down further by eliminating the ones you don't want, and then find out which ones of those you can get from wherever you are planning on getting them from, then... well, buy the ones you want!
