Hi all,
We have 3 adult hens currently sharing a coop/run. We also have 12 baby chicks in a brooding crate. (3 of these are 2 week old females, 9 are 3 days old and unsexed, but hopefully we have some girls in there).
I aim to keep 4-5 pullets as well as our 3 old girls, so a total flock of 8-9. This will mean I need to build a bigger coop & run.
My question is about what order we make all these changes!
Should I leave my old girls in the current run, slowly introduce the new permanent residents, then move everyone to the new coop/run together?
Settle the old girls into the new coop, then introduce the younger ones?
Settle the young ones in the new coop, then move the old girls in?

The new coop is going in a different spot so I can easily have both coops/runs in use for a few weeks if need be.
And in case it matters... it's winter here, so nobody is laying right now anyway.

Thanks everyone

Much will depend on......
How long will it take to build the new coop?
Will it be big enough to section off a portion for the new birds?
Where are the new chicks living now, are they together?

Welcome to BYC!
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

We just put all the chicks in together this morning. So far, so good, but we're watching them carefully. They're also all having excursions outside, to a little area next to the run the big chooks are in. So everyone can see each other.
New coop will take probably 3-4 weekends to build. Not doing anything super complicated but I have a lot of small 'helpers' 😂
I'm in Australia. In a coastal/subtropical area. Days are 15-20 degrees right now, nights get down to maybe 10.
